PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 5, 2012.
By Phaedra Scott
Teachers, parents, guests, and
fellow graduates. It’s been a long
haul, but we’re here. This night is
special for two reasons. One: We’re
graduating from Grade 8 (who wants
to say ‘thank you captain obvious’)
and Two: Because we are the last
graduating class of Blyth Public
School.
As disappointed as we might be to
see the school close, we were taught
to always look on the bright side and
look at the opportunities this is
going to create for future classes. It’s
been a good time, between Krista’s
shoes somehow ending up on the
roof and Quinton’s mom coming in
annually around Christmas to make
gingerbread houses with us, it’s
times like these we’re going to miss.
But just think of what we have to
look forward to in high school.
Although I have no real advice to
give you that’s more reliable than
my own meandering experience, I
will say this, “Be yourself, and play
ball”. Because no matter what life
throws at you, be sure you can catch
it and still be optimistic. And for
those of you who thought I was
finished, I hate to disappoint but I
still have another three-and-a-half
pages to bore you with.
It’s where it all began. The
morning songs, sand box and
playing house. Oh, to be in
Kindergarten again. Some people
say they miss nap time...but I’d have
to disagree. Nap time was torture.
Struggling to pretend that you’re
asleep when all you want to do is go
back to hitting people with foam
blocks. But you want that special
sticker for being good, so you stay
still and see who can fake snore the
loudest. One day a couple of us girls
decided to rebel against the rules of
nap time and talk under the play set.
Boy was that a mistake. Do you
know what happened? At the end
when everyone got cool truck or
butterfly stickers. We got bug
stickers. Bug stickers. We were
outraged and started a protest on the
schoolyard. Chantal even joined our
group when we realized that she was
a traitor because she, had in fact,
received a butterfly sticker. These
two blissful years were all thanks to
Mrs. McGregor who taught us how
to spell our first words. All day,
everyday. How exhausting.
Grade 1 was our first attempt at
going to school everyday and doing
real work, and Mrs. Thomas sure
