Marilyn Broadfoot, centre, was honoured last week for her lifelong contributions to the world
of local agriculture with the CKNX Radio Farm Advisory Board (FAB) Award. Presented by
Huron County Federation of Agriculture Marinus Bakker, left, and CKNX Farm Advisory Board
representative Ray Baynton, right, Broadfoot was speechless when she heard she had won
the award. Over the years Broadfoot has been involved with the Taste of Huron Committee
and the Huron-Perth Ag-Water Festival. (Submitted photo)

Meetings four and five of the
Wawanosh 4-H Pizza Club were
held on Saturday, June 23 at 5 p.m.
at the Auburn Hall. President Ellen
Jefferson began the meeting with the
pledge, then led roll call which
asked members what they thought
the club should do for meeting six.
Members had many interesting ideas
such as: a pizza cook-off, touring a
pizza place, having a pizza party and
more. Jillian Martin then read the
minutes from the last meeting. Next,
Tina Drennan handed out the cover
page for the club, which she
designed.
Mary Ellen Foran then divided the
club into groups to make four
different pizzas: white sauce
authentic Italian pizza, Betty’s bread
pizza, calzones and Mexican
confetti appetizer pizza. Members
got started making their dough and
cutting up their toppings. While the
dough was rising, Jolande
Oudshoorn, for her senior
project taught members the games
that will be played at the St. Helen’s
Reunion children’s games on
July 7.
After practising the games, the
members went inside to roll out their
dough and started cooking their
pizzas. While the pizzas were in the
oven, Ellen led meeting five’s roll
call which wanted members to
suggest ways to include pizza for
breakfast. Members’ ideas were:
peanut butter jelly pizza, tortilla
with peanut butter and fruit or just
putting bacon on pizza. Members
worked on some book work and
discussed meeting six’s activities. A
pizza sampling at the beach was
decided on.
The club then enjoyed their
pizzas. The calzones and Betty’s
bread pizza were the favourites of
Marilyn Broadfoot was almost
speechless. And according to those
who know her – that doesn’t happen
very often. Broadfoot was the guest
of honour at a recent special
reception at the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture (HCFA)
office in Vanastra. She thought the
occasion was the open house for the
federation’s renovated boardroom.
What she didn’t know is that it was
also set up so she could be presented
with the 2012 CKNX Radio
Farm Advisory Board (FAB)
Award recognizing her
contributions to agriculture and her
community.
The directors of the HCFA
nominated Broadfoot for the award,
describing her as a woman who
cares very deeply for the land and
people of rural Ontario. They
described her as tenacious, tireless
and relentless. They don’t agree with
Broadfoot’s own description of
herself as just an average person.
The federation directors point to her
work on the Taste of Huron
Committee, her involvement with
the Huron-Perth Ag-Water Festival
and her constant promotion of
agricultural education for students
and consumers. They also cited her
work with the Tipperary farmers in
their battle with a natural gas storage
company – something Broadfoot
herself includes as one of the
highlights of her efforts over the
years.
When asked about advice for
anyone thinking of following in her
footsteps, she says it’s important to
be aware of what’s going on around
you and worldwide. And she
says it’s also important to
approach problems with an
open mind and always look for
the best solution for all parts of
society, not just any one specific
group.
The CKNX Radio Farm Advisory
Board (FAB) Award is one of the
two awards administered by the
CKNX Radio Farm Advisory Board.
The other is the FAB Bursary – a
$1,000 prize awarded annually to a
student from Midwestern Ontario
taking a post-secondary education
program related to agriculture.
The board itself is made up of
agriculture and agri-business
representatives from across the
CKNX Radio coverage area who
advise the station on agriculture-
related issues.
