June 28 marked the last day of classes for the institution. Huron East has bought the property and it will soon become a small business incubator. (Denny Scott photo) By Jo-Ann McDonaldThe final week of June at theBrussels Legion Branch started with Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald attending the Brussels Public School Grade 8 graduation. She presented the proficiency awards to Faith Sebastian and Sean Mitchell. There were 14 Comrades participating in the Legion service held for the late Comrade Glen Zehr on Tuesday evening, June 26. The funeral luncheon held at the Branch for the Zehr family had Comrades helping with volunteers Faith Sebastian and Ashley Stevenson. The last general meeting for the summer was held on Tuesday evening. There were 15 Comrades in attendance. There was the usual general business to be addressed and only the executive will meet over the summer. The meeting appointed Alicia McDonald to the position of treasurer for the Branch. Nicole Noble was appointed as an executive member. The act of installation was then conducted by Comrade John Lowe. He installed Alicia, treasurer; Nicole, executive; Lisa Glanville, Sergeant-At-Arms and Mabel Glanville, executive and branch service officer. Comrade Wanda Walker said her goodbyes as she is leaving Brussels this summer. She reports she has enjoyed serving on the executive and being seniors chairman for the last three years. She enjoyed working with Bush Whittard with the euchres and at the catering events. Comrade President Deb thanked Comrade Wanda for her years of service and wished her well when she moves to her new home in the Kincardine area. We are looking for someone to help with the euchres every other Saturday or even once a month with Bush. If you think you could help out in this way, please call the Branch and volunteer. Three athletes from the Brussels area competed at the Legion DistrictTrack and Field event in Guelph acouple of weeks ago. Competing for the first time was Jasmine Vader in the 13-and-under grouping. She did very well. She placed first in three events including the shot put, discus and long jump. Congratulations to Jasmine. Provincial competition is not offered for the younger athletes. Anthony Vader competed in events and finished third in javelin, seventh in discus, fourth in 400-metres run and fourth in high jump. He is not advancing at this time to provincial competition but is on the on-call list. The third athlete is Adam Cousins who finished second in high jump and fourth in javelin. Adam is advancing to provincials July 6-7 in Oshawa. Congratulations to all and good luck. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 13-and-a-half tables of players. Winners were: high, Eileen Sellers and Marie Stewart, 83; second, Glen Sellers and Ed Stewart, 80; third, Marion Harrison and Olave Little, 75; low, Bernice and Kay Hesselwood, 43; lone hands, Jim Devereaux and Russ Smith, five. Comrade Marg Bennett, filling in for Comrade Wanda, helped Bush with the euchre. The fish fry crew was at Family Paradise to feed the crowd of over 175. It was a lovely day under the beautiful shade trees to work and Comrades Bob and Monica Richardson, Ken Bird, his friend Marcel and Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald got the job done. The crew was off to Lucknow for Canada Day celebrations and to do the annual fish fry for the Lucknow Legion. It was a girl-power day and Comrades Lisa Glanville, Sandra Josling, Deb Cann, Judy Lee, Jo- Ann McDonald and Sharon Robbins had fun feeding the 145 diners, a smaller crowd than usual. The sign-up sheet for the food booth at the Homecoming is up at the Branch. We will need everyone’s help sometime over the weekend. It will make the job easier if Comrades could drop in and sign upfor a shift or two, or call and speakwith Sandra. Earl Rowe Provincial Park by Alliston was our choice for celebrating the blessings we have living in Canada. If you didn’t do it on the first, you need to do it now – name three things about Canada that are yours to enjoy, that a lot of countries do not provide. Take a moment. My list would include the changing of the seasons; freedom of speech and even the freedom of movement in your country and available fresh, clean water, those three would be my start for reasons for loving Canada. I’m sure your list will be different but it is an exercise that helps us see that we are a people of privilege. I have a friend who writes a thankfuls list every day and her attitude shows it. Try it, it may even make you happier. Holiday time seems to slow the brain a little so the little things in life can be noted. For me recently it was a turkey vulture on the sixth who really didn’t want to leave his dinner for an unwelcome truck. A last- minute reluctant take off made it very clear, he was not impressed with having his meal interrupted. Oh my how like the animals we really are. The other smile this past week was a pretty purple petunia, blooming gracefully from a crack at the garage door. When we left for Halifax there were a few stray green bits. It has taken great root, and is away from the car tires. So lucky it and fortunate us to have such a tough wee thing in our lives. The blue jays are another reason to smile here. A few peanuts each morning on the steps of the porch have them swooping in like a drive- through coffee stop. Other times they stop and test the weight of the nuts as if to get the heaviest one, often they try three and return to the first nut before takeoff. They land on the rail, survey the feast and then get busy. If we happen to go out and not provide their nourishment, they squawk until we get the message. A fox, a gull and crows also gave us a smile recently. Enjoy the world around. Be sure to stop and check the great pictures in the windows on the east side of Turnberry Street, a glance at the past and pure pleasure at the recent ones. They are great work – a combination of the efforts of Paul Nichol, Lynne Moreland (West Coast Photography) OMAFRA, Huron County, Huron East and the economic development departments. So thanks to all for your part in our village. The boots, flowers and branners all around town are looking good and 140th plans are getting firm. Yippee. Enjoy July.
