Deputy-Reeve David Riach, who is North Huron’s representative onCHIP, provided The Citizen with areport that monitored speeds at fivedifferent locations: Queen Street at Westmoreland Drive in Blyth on June 8, in Morris-Turnberry near Turnberry School on June 9, Queen Street at the Bridge in Blyth on June 10, near the Sparlings Soccer Pitches in Central Huron just south of Blyth on June 11 and at the Auburn Grill on County Road 25 on June 12. A grand total of 3,548 vehicleswere recorded over the five days and2,505, or approximately 70.5 per cent, were found speeding. The five different areas have different speed limits but, on average, most travellers were travelling 4.8 kilometers over the speed limit throughout the various areas (for specific information see the related chart).Riach stated, during the councilmeeting, that the information wassent to the Ontario Provincial Police. “If they decide to set up a speed trap as a result of these figures, there will be zero tolerance for people travelling faster than they should,” he said. “The public response was excellent. We had people standing watching to see how fast people were going.” The sign was purchased through donations from Huron County municipalities and, while it is free to be used anywhere in the county, those communities who did contribute to the purchase will be given priority over those whodecided not to.Councillor Brock Vodden statedthat the numbers were “staggering, but not surprising.” “The numbers of speeders was awful high,” he said. “This is an education problem though, people need to be taught not to do this and the Ontario Provincial Police could help.” According to Councillor Ray Hallahan, however, the best education could come as a result of a speed trap. “The best way people will learn is to get a $200 ticket,” he said. “You will definitely remember that.” Speeders run rampant around North Huron Obituaries By Denny ScottThe Citizen
