Every summer Huron Junior Farmers across the province host international delegates over the summer. This year five of them spent a week near Brussels. Amy Hopley and Katie Delaney from England, Lara Freiburghaus from Switzerland, Emma Laughlin from Ireland and Dale Hayers from Australia spent a week touring farms and tourist hotspots in the area while they stayed with hosts from Huron Junior Farmers. With the exception of Frieburghaus, all of the delegates are involved in Junior Farmers or Young Farmers depending on what it is called in their country. Frieburghaus got involved with her country’s International Farm Youth Exchange. She was not quite sure what awaited her in Ontario. Hayers is the only one in the group not from a farm but says many of his friends in Tasmania are involved. He wanted to see the housing industry and construction. Hayers says, “It was really quite interesting, vastly different from home.” Delaney says the highlight of her trip so far has been a camping trip to Tobermory. She called it a great experience and she says she learned that she is an excellent campfire cook. Hopley says “I just wanted to see farms,” as well as Niagara Falls. “I got to see lots of sheep farms [in this area].” From a sheep farm in England, Hopley was happy to learn that there were many sheep farms near the hosts, she had only seen two sheep on her entire trip before travelling to her host in Belgrave. “I’ve been interested in the differences and similarities [of dairy farms],” says Laughlin who is from a dairy farm in Ireland. All of the delegates enjoyed touring dairy farms including a Blyth-area goat farm. Hopley says she learned to milk cows at previous host’s farm. Besides touring farms and spending time with their Huron Junior Farmer hosts, the delegates also saw Dear Johnny Deere at the Blyth Festival.
