The modest two-game winning
streak of the Blyth Barons came to a
halt Friday evening as they got stung
by the Sebringville Sting by a score
of 7-5 in a Huron County Fastball
League game played in Blyth.
The Barons put a single runner
across the plate in the third inning,
added two more in the fourth and
then put single runners across the
plate in the bottom of the fifth and
seventh innings.
The Barons had the bases loaded
in the fifth inning, but as player
Shawn Bromley stated, “We had
runners in scoring position, but we
were just not able to hit them home.”
He noted it was a good game, a
close game. “Sebringville is a good
team,” he said.
Mike Kerr, Shawn Bromley and
Steve Cook each had a pair of
singles for the Barons. Single base
hits were rapped out by Adam
Cronin, Chris Stewart, Dana
Doherty and Mike Bromley. Cronin
went the distance on the mound for
the Barons.
Next game for the Barons is
Sunday, July 8, when they travel to
Zurich for a 6 p.m. game against the
Rangers. Next home game for the
Barons is July 27 when they play a
double header. They take on the
Wroxeter Rippers at 7:30 p.m. and
then the Zurich Rangers at 9 p.m.

Pulling ahead
The Blyth Barons couldn’t extend their pair of wins to a streak of three when they came up
against the Sebringville Sting on June 22. The Sting’s offense put them two runs ahead before
the end of the game to give them a 7-5 victory over Blyth. (Jim Brown Photo)
Dangles
A Blyth player put some serious moves on her Clinton
counter-part when the Highway 4 rivals met in North Huron
Soccer League action on June 25. The U18 girls next play
in their year-end tournament which begins next week on
Tuesday, July 3 and will run until July 7 including rain dates.
The four U18 girl teams from Clinton, Blyth, WIngham and
Goderich will participate in a round robin from July 3 to July
5 with each team playing the others. The finals will begin on
July 6 with teams playing to determine who gets the gold
and who walks away empty-handed. (Denny Scott photo)
Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club enjoyed another busy past
week while gearing up for summer.
On Tuesday, June 19 the ladies
kicked off the week with a great start
hosting an interclub fun night. The
36 gals played a best ball scramble
before joining together in the
dining lounge for a tasty smoked
pork chop buffet. The girls had
members of Blackhorse, Maitland
and Summerhill courses take part on
a hot humid evening. First-
place honours went to the team of
Heather Logan, Christa Thompson,
Dianne Hawthorne and Linda
Walker followed by Sandra Edgar,
Luanne Kerr, Jan Dauphin and
Pauline Pegg.
The Wednesday morning senior
men had another great turnout as 31
golfers took part on a beautiful
morning. Warren Rich took home
first place with Jeff Lockridge
second and Al Webster, third. Dave
Tiffin was winner of the longest putt
while Rollie Kaufman finished
closest to the pin. Don Bone again
shot low round of the day with 40
but this week had company by Brian
Skinn, Harry George and Doug
Vanderwoude.
Thursday the severe thunder-
storms played havoc with the early
group of players but despite the rain,
51 dedicated golfers took part. Jay
Marston showed some of last year’s
form with a solid round of 37 for
low gross. John Dailleboust and
Trevor Hopf were winners of the
closest to the pin while Brian Skinn
and Jason Goodall claimed longest
putt prizes. The hidden score
winners were Terry Anger, Kyle
Moran and Eric Deyell with Ken
Mathers taking home the slosh
award for golfers who were too
drenched to finish.
Saturday the club hosted the third
annual Andy Ste. Marie memorial
tournament on a terrific sunny day.
The 36 golfers played a three-man
scramble before joining in the
golfer’s lounge for lunch and prizes.
Andy’s brother Bill and niece Shelly
Haines presented this year’s plaque
to the team of Terry Anger, Terry
Powell and Dan Campbell. Closest
to the pin awards went to Don Edgar
with two and John Dybes while
longest drive winners were T.P. and
Kevin Hopf. The Edwards, Anger
and Edgar teams were all prize
winners of the skins game.
Saturday afternoon, immediately
following the scramble, the club
hosted a group from Driftwood
Beach Park. The 40 golfers played
nine holes of golf and shared many
laughs before getting together for a
roast beef buffet in the dining
lounge. Organizers Gary Scott and
Debbie Miller did a fantastic job of
putting this fun-filled group
together.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
The Andy Ste. Marie memorial
tournament again showed the true
value of small golf establish-
ments. Andy may be gone but not
forgotten.
