While trying not to melt, the Grade 6/7 students are reflecting on their years at Blyth. Using comic strips generated by the idea from the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid, students are recreating their favourite Blyth Public School memories. Grade 6 students are finishing their dream backyard assignment which focused on measurement. They are also working on their school fair projects. Lots of art happening in the Grade 6/7 class. Thanks for a great year. By Courtney Bachert Classes are so excited and are finishing up their last few subjects as the school year comes to an end. Most of the classes are getting ready for the school fair so they are picking their best work to enter for this fall. The Grade 3/4 students have been having a lot of fun with their medieval times unit and have actually turned the entrance of their door into a castle, complete with a drawbridge. The students worked in groups while they painted the mural for the door and determined what their section would have been in medieval times. In Grade 4 math, they are working on data management and probability. They have been collecting and organizing data using many of the students in the school. All of the French classes have been working on their projects for the school fair. Each of the Grade 8 students created a booklet based on travel; a place to go and how they are getting there. The Grade 7 students have all created a map of a community and wrote down where they go and why they go there. The Grade 6 students created “wanted” posters. They describe the criminal and made up rewards for whoever finds the villain. The Grade 5 students created booklets about different kinds of weather. The Grade 4 students created booklets about preposition of place. They are all finishing up the year with a movie played in French. The Grade 2 students have been building vehicles that wil help move a load as part of their science unit on simple machines. They have been learning how wheels and axles help us do work and how friction and weight can affect the distance their vehicle will roll. By Hunter Dale This week Kindergarten has begun to finish up all their units of study. They performed with some of the Grade 1/2 students at the Blyth Celebration church service on Sunday. Throughout the week thhey had been getting together daily to practise singing their “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam” song. They wore a special glittering sunray hat for the event. The junior students are studying insets and learned about their homes, food and parts (head, thorax, abdomen and six legs). They have finished their huge alphabet books and took them home with great pride. They were a lot of work. The senior kindergarten class has been learning about subtraction and how to subtract using the strategies of a picture, their fingers, a number line and a 10 frame. They have found that if you can add, you can easily subtract. They have also been learning about how to tell time to the hour and half hour and recording when we wake, eat breakfast, eat supper and go to bed. Nancy Michie Administrator Clerk-Treasurer 519-887-6137 Comics tell student’s memories Letters to the Editor THE EDITOR, I want to thank the citizens of Blyth and other wards for their strong support for our efforts to save Blyth Public School. Your many e- mails, letters, phone calls and personal comments of support have been deeply appreciated. I am deeply saddened by our failure. The battle must continue until our school board and others across the province return to acting as trustees for their electors rather than overseers. That can only happen with legislative changes to the Education Act, major changes in Ministry of Education policy and practices and empowerment of the Ontario Ombudsman to investigate school boards and force them to be accountable. That battle must be waged on a broader front, but I am determined to support it in any way that I can. H. Brock Vodden Councillor - Municipality of North Huron. Councillor thanks locals for support THE EDITOR, What another tremendous success! Approximately 350 people were fed a wonderful roast beef dinner at the annual Logan Hallahan Memorial Service. Weather was definitely in our favour. The live and silent auctions had many exceptional items generously donated by many local businesses, individuals and the Hockey Hall of Fame. Auctioneer Jim Campbell from Lucan entertained the crowd for two hours. Yuk Yuk’s Toronto left the crowd amused and the Family Feud was a huge hit. A big thank you goes out to the four teams who willingly participated in the Family Feud. The live and silent auction brought in approximately $16,000. The 50/50 draw winner was Marjorie Wenzel winning $283. Honourable mention needs to go out to the Belgrave Kinsmen for their support of the event. The Belgrave Kinsmen are a fantastic group of guys and also with the support of their wives, they made the event so successful. A huge thank you to our family, friends and our incredibly supportive community for making the event so successful. Dwight, Dawson and I love you all! We hope the funds from this event will purchase the equipment needed to someday save the life of a loved one, while honouring the memory of our own little man Logan. It is also important for us to support the Wingham and District Hospital which has provided our family with great care for many years. Sincerely, Janice, Dwight and Dawson Hallahan. Hallahan Memorialevent a success I remember you At the Blyth Public School Celebration of Education, former principal Ron Higgins, right, who was the big boss at the school between 1960 and 1966, returned to the school with his wife, Shirley, centre, to chat with people he may have remembered from his days at the school, and he found one in Betsy Allan (Elliott), left, a former student of his. (Shawn Loughlin photo) By Madelaine Higgins This week at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School the final school week of the 2011-2012 school year, classes were winding down in preparation for examinations. Monday and Tuesday of this week were the last two days of regular classes before exams. Tuesday was Grade 12 day where all graduating students received ‘St. Anne’s Class of 2012’ t-shirts to wear for the duration of the day. The Grade 12 students also had an extended lunch period in order to share extra time with their friends and to sign each other’s shirts. Wednesday, June 20 was the first exam day for all period one classes, with shortened-period classes held in the morning prior to exams. Thursday followed a similar schedule with shortened classes in the morning before period two exams. Friday, June 22 and Monday, June 25 students finished off their school year by writing their period three and four exams. Wishing the best of luck and a, “Hands Up” to all students in their final days of school for this year, and look out for your 2012-2013 Minister of Public Relations, Rachel R! Have a great summer and thank you for all of your support. St. Anne’s celebrates end of the school year
