Following Christ!
(J. C. Ryle)
“If anyone would come after Me--he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and
follow Me!” Luke 9:23
O that Christians, the very best of them, were not so slack in following Christ!
Some stop to trifle with the perishable things of earth.
Some stop to pick up the gaudy, scentless flowers by the wayside.
Some stop to sleep, forgetting that this is not our rest--it is cursed ground.
Some stop to pick holes and find fault with their fellow-travelers.
Few of Christ’s sheep hold on their way as steadily as they might. But still, compared
with the world--they are following Jesus Christ. Oh that they would only remember, that
those who follow Him most fully--shall follow Him most comfortably!
They are following Christ, and they know where they are going. And even in the dark
river, in the valley of the shadow of death--they feel a confidence that their Shepherd
will be with them, and that His rod and His staff with comfort them. They would all tell
you that they are poor wandering sheep, ashamed of the little fruit they bear. But still,
as weak as they are, they are determined to follow on to the end, and to say, “None but
Christ--in life and in death, in time and in eternity!”
“Leaving you an example--so that you should follow in His steps!” 1 Peter 2:21

Butterflies mark garden’s 10th anniversaryBev Elliott said that the 10thanniversary celebration and memory garden service held at the BlythGreenway Memory Garden on the weekend was a success.“It was an awesome day,” shesaid. “We had better than 100 peoplein attendance.”The event, which is typically held
in the fall, was pushed ahead this
year to hopefully encourage some
annual tourism of a different type
according to Elliott.
“We released 115 butterflies,
which shows how much people
support the garden,” she said.
“Those butterflies, because it’s
spring, will find milkweed to lay
their larvae on. Those larvae will
grow, become caterpillars, then
become butterflies before migrating
to Mexico and returning in the
spring to lay their own larvae.”
She said that if the service had
been held in the fall, the butterflies
would have returned to wherever
they were spawned; in this case, that
would be Peterborough.
The butterflies were purchased
online and kept dormant through
being kept cold before they were
released. The butterflies were
purchased online, with people
paying $20 per butterfly as part of
the fundraiser. The proceeds went
towards the garden.
“We raised approximately $800,”
she said. “More than that, it was an
incredible experience. I’ve never
witnessed a butterfly release and I
bet 99 per cent of Blyth haven’t seen
anything like that and may never see
it again. It was definitely a first inBlyth.”Elliott said that the monarchbutterflies were impressive and thatmost were at least three inches tall
and beautiful and were also
accompanied with a North American
legend about the butterfly.
Rev. Gary Clark of the Blyth
United Church presided over the
ceremony and, according to Elliott,
did an excellent job of telling the
legend of the butterfly in his
message.
Soloist Jasmine McAdam also
helped with butterfly-themed songs.
Greetings were brought by
Deputy-Reeve David Riach on
behalf of North Huron and Doug
Scrimgeour from the Greenway
Committee.

Many people enjoyed the
“Celebration of Education” at the
Blyth Public School on Saturday
and Sunday of this past week. The
community church service was well
attended and the service at the
Memory Garden was also well
attended. During the service there
were many beautiful Monarch
butterflies released in the garden by
people who had purchased them in
memory of someone. This was the
highlight for the children attending
to see the butterflies flying around
the garden. Rev. Gary Clark and

Community church service held
Everyone was invited to the
community church service held at
Blyth Public School as part of its
“Celebration of Education”.
Principal Alice McDowell
welcomed everyone to the service.
She invited everyone to visit the
room down the hall to see the items
of past years. The call to worship
was from Psalm 32: 8,10 and the
opening prayer was read by Judy

I am disappointed to say that as I
graduated on June 25, this will be my
last article for the school. It’s been a
wonderful year and I had a great
experience and was honoured to
write for The Citizen.
It’s the last full week of school so
obviously there isn’t going to be too
much work to do in class. Report
cards are almost finished and
students are focusing strictly on fun
for the last official days of Blyth
Public School.
During the sweltering heatwave,
track and field districts took place in
Stratford. Everyone had a
spectacular time and did a great job
in their events, when they weren’tTeam Propane Power entered the
Goderich and Area Relay for Life,
held June 15 and 16 in Goderich in
support of cancer research. This is
the team’s second consecutive year
in the relay.
The highly-motivated group
raised over $5,000 which was
matched by Sparling’s for a total of
$11,150.
Team Propane Power was
recognized with Gold Level Status
for most money raised and the Spirit

Sparling’s demonstrates
community spirit in many ways –
and each year, the company
supports hundreds of deserving
organizations across Ontario.
You will see Sparling’s employees
active in your community, too. In

These demonstrations of support

Monarchs mark the date
Carlene Bremner was one of more than 100 people on site
for the anniversary of the memory garden at the Blyth
Greenway Trail entrance in Blyth. Bremner is shown here
