Former supervisor recalls time at Blyth Public SchoolBy Courtney BachertIt was a spectacular experienceinterviewing Mr. Bill Black on hisjourney with Blyth Public School. He started his career in this area supervising at Blyth, Belgrave and Brussels schools which soon led to being the principal at Brussels then later in Colborne. In 1976 he came to Blyth as the principal, creating many memories as he went on. Some of Mr. Black’s memories at Blyth were of the “Special Days”. He put on hot dog days, Canada days, and stampede days. One time, he came to school dressed up as a Canadian Mountie! He especially liked the trips to Ottawa every year with the graduating classes. They would go to Ottawa for a few days and they would tour universities and learn lots but have a great time together. He also enjoyed the music program, as he is very musical. Mr. Black would play the guitar with the students and they would each have their own music book in which they would fill with their favourite songs. He would learn and play the songs on his guitar along with the students and they would all sing together. Mrs. Shirley Vincent led the music program in which Mr. Black was very happy to have her lead the choirs and bands with all of the students. One of the things Mr. Blackalways liked was the staff. Theyalways got along and the sameteachers were here for about 13years so they got to know each other really well in that long period of time. One of the things he always said was “the staff room is the noisiest room in the school” because the teachers were always laughing and talking during the breaks and recesses so you could hear them over the normal class noise. Some of the different things they did when Mr. Black taught was in the mornings, they would have 10- minute assemblies where they would make all of the special announcements, because he didn’t like to use the public announcement system in the school. They would sing songs together and read the Bible and after that they would all go to their classes. When Mr. Black had to leave and go to Zurich Public School, he said he was really disappointed because he had gotten to know and connect with all of the people, which is what he liked about the small schools. He grew up in a one-room schoolhouse and he said it was a good experience because they all got the opportunity to bond and become close to one another. They would all work together to make sure they all did what they were supposed to and felt comforted that he always had hisclassmates’ support. He is definitely disappointed thatthe small schools are closingbecause he feels that the students won’t be as close and supportive towards one another. But on theother hand, he thinks the newelementary school in Wingham willgo over well and will hopefullyaccomplish its objective. It was an honour to have had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Blackand listen to his remarkable historyhere at Blyth. He is a very successfuland accomplished individual and hasa kind, caring and determined personality to match. Continued from page 3 close. Blyth Public School is full of talent and the show is sure to be enjoyable. By Courtney Bachert With less than two weeks left of school, everyone is extremely excited and pumped up for summer holidays. Classes are just finishing up their work and are getting ready to party. The Grade 3 students are swimming two times this week at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex in the Swim to Survive program. They are also doing an independent novel study using the Beverly Cleary series, “Boxcar Children” and “Magic Treehouse” series. The Grade 4/5 class is finishing up literature circles this week and will be experimenting with probability in math using dice. They already started with six-sided die and are moving to 10-sided for more difficulty. Di you know that by the age of 10, kids can identify about 400 logos. The Grade 3/4 class is investigating logos and advertisement tricks to see how advertisers trick us into buying their products. They’ve looked at logo alphabets and are in the process of creating their own. In Grade 4 math, they’re wrapping up their unit on measurement. By Hunter Dale The Grade 1/2 class has experienced another busy week at school. In connection with their unit on time they made sun dials outside. After using their compasses to locate north, they set up a framework to represent a clock using a hula hoop to contain blocks for the numbers. They placed a stick in the middle of the circle. The shadow of the stick points to the hour to show the time. As the sun changes position in the sky, the shadow on the sun dial changes accordingly. Their class had had the responsibility to turn clay butterflies into Monarchs by carefully painting them black, orange and white. The butterflies will be displayed at the Blyth Memory Garden. Mrs. Roe is very proud of the job the Grade 1/2 students accomplished. The Grade 1 students are practising a song with the Kindergarten class and Mrs. Thorpe- Hearn. Their two classes will form a choir and sing at the church service during the Celebration of Education Weekend in Blyth. Students study time, sundials Continued from page 3 conference and also in the congregation as Rev. Clark told his story. The next hymn, “Faith of Our Fathers” was sung followed by the offering, the offering hymn, the offertory prayer, the prayers of the people, the silent prayers and the singing of The Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn was, “Come and Find a Quiet Centre”. Everyone was invited for coffee and fellowship after the service. Clark at meeting
