participated in the tournament
including Sun County, Halton Hills,
Brampton, Kitchener-Waterloo and
the host Arthur squad.
The day started with the Outlaws
taking on the Brampton Excelsior
team resulting in a lopsided 16-1
victory. Everyone on the team
contributed but of special note was
Mitchell Daw of Wingham who
chalked up six assists in the win.
Call-up Owen Mitchell of Wingham
also notched his first goal with the
Powell Contracting crew.
The Outlaws then met a toughMississauga Tomahawks team in atight semi-final match. The gamewas scoreless until the start of the
second period when Blyth’s Matt
Van Wyk took a pass from his
brother Mike and lasered a shot over
the left shoulder of the Mississauga
keeper.
Almost another full period would
pass before the lamp would be lit
again. Dalton Carey of Blyth was
under heavy pressure and went to his
other hand to deliver a pass and send
Daw in alone on a breakaway. Daw
made no mistake going high over the
goalie’s right shoulder to make it 2-
0 Outlaws.
Despite the withering pressure of47 total shots by the Outlaw offence, there was no further scoring in thesecond or third periods until Cole
Dannemann of Listowel added an
empty net goal in the closing minute
to send the Tomahawks home on the
short end of a 3-0 loss. Outlaw
goalie Nic Matheson of Atwood
turned away 31 Mississauga shots to
earn the shutout win. That left the
Outlaws to face a Halton Hills
Bulldogs squad in the championship
game.
Braydon Whitfield of Belgrave
was able to open the scoring for the
Outlaws in the championship by
taking a pass from Wyatt Carey of
Blyth and finding a hole in thebottom corner of the Bulldogs net.The tense 1-0 lead held up for therest of the first period.
The second stanza was opened
with Bobby Nesbitt pouncing on a
loose ball and winning the 50-yard-
breakaway footrace to deposit the
Outlaw’s second goal. That opened
the flood gates for the Outlaws as
Dannemann and Dustin Pennington
of Belgrave added further markers
around a pair of goals by Brent
Montgomery of Wingham. The
second period closed with the
Outlaws enjoying a 7-0 margin
heading into the third period.
The third period saw the Outlaws
continue their offensive anddefensive domination and cruise toan 8-1 victory. The Halton Hillsgoalie stopped 61 shots. Compared
quite favourably to the 20 shots
given up by the Outlaws. Arden
Coultes and Jared Logan (both of
Belgrave) continuously
pressured the Bulldogs into key
turnovers.
The Midget Outlaws squad was
able to head with a fully deserved
title and more hardware to add to
their trophy case. Their next home
game is at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex, Wingham on
Monday, June 25 at 8 p.m. against
Kitchener-Waterloo.

Brussels Tigers squeak by
Zurich Rangers 9-8 last week
Andrew Baker’s sacrifice fly to
left field brought Corey Campbell
home from third base as the Brussels
Tigers edged past the Zurich
Rangers, 9-8 in Huron County
Fastball League play Friday evening
at the Optimist ball park in
Brussels.Shawn Daw started on the
mound for the Tigers, but Mike
Watson came on in relief to record
the victory.
The Tigers put one run across the
plate in the first inning, added two
more in the second, one each in the
third, fourth and fifth, before putting
two across in the sixth and one more
in the bottom of the seventh. Zurich
matched Brussels run for run, tying
the game with a pair of runs in the
top of the seventh.
Adam Corbett belted a home run
for the Tigers. Jamie Hickling
connected for a triple. Shawn
Johnston had a double and single,
with Daw rapping out three
singles. Single base hits were
contributed by Brian McArter,
Campbell and Baker.
Veteran player Doug Shaw said it
was a close game. “It was a well
played, hard-fought game” he said.
He indicated that the Brussels
pitchers pitched well. “Mike Watson
came in, in a close spot and got us
out of trouble,” he said.
According to Shaw, the key to the
team’s success against the Rangers
was timely hitting, especially Adam
Corbett and Andrew Baker.
The Tigers were in Walton on
Tuesday for a game against the
Brewers. Next game for the Tigers is
July 8 when they travel to Fullarton
for a 7 p.m. game against the A’s.
Next home game for the Brussels
squad is July 11 when they host the
Goderich Grizzlies beginning
at 8:30 p.m. at the Optimist ball
park.
