SportsBarons topple best fastball teams in HCFL action
The Blyth Barons took on the two
top teams in the Huron County
Fastball League and came away
with a pair of wins.
Last Tuesday in Monkton, the
Barons took on the defending
champion Walton Brewers and came
away with a 7-5 decision. Recently-
acquired Craig Elliott recorded nine
strikeouts in registering the victory
on the mound.
Chris Stewart clouted a home run
for the Barons. Shawn Bromley was
2-4 at the plate with two runs batted
in. Mike McDonald also had two
hits in four at-bats.
This past Friday evening, the
Barons took on the Wingham
Hitmen and with a two-out rally in
the bottom of the seventh inning
scored a 6-5 decision. Elliott went
the distance on the mound to record
the victory.
Back-to-back-to-back triples by
Mike McDonald, Shawn Bromley
and Dana Doherty tied the game at
five. Adam Cronin’s single
brought in Doherty with the winning
run.
Bromley also rapped out a pair of
singles, as did Darcey Cook. Mike
Kerr collected a double and Elliott
contributed a single.
“It was a big win against
Wingham,” said player Shawn
Bromley. “It was big win against
Walton last Tuesday.”
“Those are two big wins for us
because those are the top two teams
in the league,” he said.
According to Bromley, the key to
the team’s success Friday against the
Hitmen was timely hitting.
“We hit when we needed to,” he
said. “That was the difference.”
He noted that the Barons played
an error-free game.
Bromley added that it was
probably the best game of the year
for the Barons.
The next game for the Barons is
tomorrow, Friday, when they host
the Sebringville Sting, beginning at
7:30 p.m.
Barons beat Wingham
On Friday the Barons took to the field against the
Wingham Hitmen and, after a two-out streak in the
seventh inning, they were able to pull out a 6-5 victory. The
team was led by pitcher Craig Elliott, a new addition to the
team, who, after posting nine strikeouts against the
Walton Brewers on Tuesday, played the entire game
against Wingham. (Jim Brown photo)

Walton Brewers top Goderich
The Walton Brewers regained
their winning form in the Huron
County Fastball League on Saturday
evening in a home game against the
Goderich Grizzlies, played in
Seaforth.
With the game tied at one, Jeff
Robinson received a walk and then
Brandon McGavin came in to pinch
run. McGavin advanced to second
on a sacrifice bunt and then scored
on a single by Jeff Smith to give the
Brewers a 2-1 lead. Pitcher Scott
Leonhardt got the Grizzlies out in
the top of the seventh to preserve the
victory.
Leonhardt helped his own cause at
the plate with an inside-the-park
home run. Blaine Marks also singled
in the game, Leonhardt recorded
eight strikeouts in posting the win on
the mound.
Veteran player Paul Dolmage said
it was a close ball game. “It was a
pitchers’ duel,” he said.
According to Dolmage, it was a
timely hit by Jeff Smith to win the
ball game in the sixth inning. “It was
a good team win,” he said.
In the game last Tuesday against
Blyth, won by the Barons 7-5,
Dolmage said Blyth got ahead of
the Brewers early and Walton could
just not recover.
The Brewers were scheduled to
play the Brussels Tigers on Tuesday
at the Walton ballpark. Walton
travels to Fullarton on Sunday for a
game against the A’s. Next home
game for the Brewers is Tuesday
when they host the Belmore Stingers
beginning at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, June 16 the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club
hosted the sixth annual Doctor
Recruitment golf tournament. The
61 golfers enjoyed nine holes of golf
on a beautiful day before joining
together for a roast beef buffet in the
dining lounge. This group of people
led by Jan McKague Weisher, Doug
Neil and Doug Skinn do a fantastic
job of organizing this event and as in
the past years the 2012 tournament
was a great success.
The recruitment committee, with
help from many sponsors, had a
fantastic prize table. Special thanks
to Harry George who ran the putting
contest as well as Wayne Pletch who
brought his truck in for the ball drop.
On Wednesday, June 13 the senior
men had 31 golfers hit the links.
Gary Ford went home with first
prize followed by Ken Saxton,
second and Don Bone, third. Jamie
Sanderson was winner of the longest
putt while Gerry Edwards claimed
closest to the pin award. This bunch
of great guys continue to increase in
golfers every week and are
always looking for new faces to join
them.
The Thursday night men again had
a wonderful night to play golf and 70
golfers came keen to play. Don Bone
fired a superb round of one under par
34 highlighted by an eagle on the par
four third hole. Great round Don.
Don also was winner of the closest
to the pin along with Dave Gamble.
Other winners were Ben
Dailleboust, Gord Fisher, Pat
Rozendal, Pete Inglis and Bob
Foxton for longest putts while the
hidden score prizes went to Rick
Scammell, Mike Piliarik, Dan
McBurney and Doug Reinhardt.
This Saturday the club hosts the
Andy Ste. Marie Memorial
three-man scramble starting at 9
a.m.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
The annual children’s golf clinic
running the first week of July is fast
approaching and the club is looking
for volunteers to help with this fun
week for the kids to kick off their
summer. Anyone who can spare a
few hours to help would be
appreciated.
