(Vikcy Bremner photo) Lions donate to upgrade poolThe Brussels Lions Club hasrecently contributed close to $9,000towards renovations and upgrades tothe Brussels, Morris and Grey(BMG) swimming pool. The facility has been in need of a facelift for some time and particularly so after the upgrades the Optimist Club had made across the road at the ball park a couple of years ago. Together, the ballpark, swimming pool and children’s playground create a recreational facility that the municipality and its citizens can be very proud of. It is the focal point of summer recreation in the village and is used by citizens of all ages, from infants to seniors. It will be great to have it all looking its best for visitors during this summer’s Homecoming celebrations. The financial support of the Lions Club has allowed a new steel roof to be installed on the building to eliminate the leaks that have developed over time. New soffit, fascia and gutters that had either fallen off or been vandalized, have also been replaced and new fencing has also been installed on the south side of the pool’s deck. In addition to the financial contribution, a number of Lions Club members gathered recently to give the exterior of the building a fresh coat of paint. The new exterior colours for the building were chosen to match those used at the ballpark. The pool’s staff has also been busy sprucing up the interior of the building in preparation for this years swimming season. In addition to the recent upgrades, the BMG Recreation Committee installed a new accessible washroom last fall at the north end of the building with the financial support of a Trillium Grant. At the same time, new larger doors were also installed to the pool’s change rooms. The last major renovation to the building took place in 1986 when the construction of the community swimming pool was undertaken as a project of the Brussels Lions Club. Since that time, the club has provided ongoing financial support to the municipality and its recreation committee to fund capital projectsand to fund necessary repairs at thefacility. In order to fund these and manyother worthwhile projects both locally and abroad, the Lions Club undertakes several fundraising activities throughout the year including the annual Elimination Draw, Christmas Raffle and Hockey Draw. Tickets will soon be available from Lions members for a duck race to be held, water levels permitting, during this summer’s Homecoming weekend. In the event that water levels do not cooperate, the Duck race will be changed to a raffle. The Brussels Lions Club has served Brussels and the surrounding area since 1946. It is a group of like- minded individuals that meets twice monthly during the months of September through May, to serve theneeds of our community. The Lionsare always on the lookout for newmembers who have a desire to makethe community a better place to live, while partaking in fun and good fellowship. Membership is open to both men and women.
