Plant auction does well ‘Crusty Crew’ holds first meeting Cooks in training The Wawanosh 4-H Club held its first pizza club meeting last week and members decided to call themselves The Crusty Crew. The next meeting will be held in Auburn on June 16. (Photo submitted) The Auburn Horticultural Society held its annual plant auction on May 14 and is delighted to share that they exceeded past sales due to the overwhelming attendance this year. Brenda Empey advised that the plant sale proceeds were $906.50 and door prize proceeds totalled $185. Of the 39 memberships that were registered that night, 17 were new members. The Horticultural Society would like to thank all who were involved, both supporters and volunteers. If you haven’t paid your 2012 membership, or wish to join, the cost is $5 and can be left at the Auburn post office – attention: Brenda Empey. Please include your e-mail address and phone contact as well so that we can keep you updated with coming events. By now many will have noticed the new sign that has been placed at the Auburn Community Park. The sign was designed and paid for by the Auburn Playground Committee and reflects the community partnerships involved in the purchase and construction of the new playground equipment in 2011. As the community was an integral piece to completing this project, the new name, “Auburn Community Park” seems appropriate. WALKERBURN CLUB Eight members of the Walkerburn Club met at the home of Christena Gross on May 14. Pat Hunking was president of the day. She asked Dorothy Schneider to do some readings for her. Dorothy read, “My Mother’s House” and “My Mother’s Hand”. Pat followed with prayer. Eileen McClinchey read the secretary’s report followed by the roll call answered with “Memories By Reba JeffersonThe Wawanosh 4-H Club held itsfirst Pizza club meeting onThursday, June 7 at the Jeffersons’ at 7 p.m. Junior leaders Maisy and Reba Jefferson directed the members in a pizza delivery relay. Members had put on their uniform, jump rope with some young girls in the street, crawl through a tight space, pet an angry dog, then make change for their customer all while balancing their pizza box. Leader,Mary Ellen Foran officially startedthe meeting with the pledge, thentalked about the club requirements. The election of officers was then held. Ellen Jefferson was elected president, with Jolande Oudshoorn as her vice. Mary Kate Higgins was nominated for treasurer, Scott Jefferson for attendance recorder and Tina Drennan for cover designer. Reba volunteered to be press reporter. Next, Ellen led rollcall, which asked member what theirfavourite kind of pizza was. Mostcommon answers were pepperoni, Hawaiian and meat lovers. Following roll call, Reba and Ellen presented the history of pizza which began in the stone age, when people used dough as a plate to hold their food, moved on to soldiers baking dough on their shields, then to its migration to America due to soldiers coming back from Italy with a desire for pizza and Italian celebrities publicizing their love for pizza. Mary Ellen and Eileen George then discussed the important ingredients for pizza making. The club then broke up into fourgroups: two groups made the dough, one group cut and shredded the toppings and the other made the sauce. The members made two pizzas: one pepperoni and the other vegetable. While the pizzas were in the oven, members discussed possible names for the club and decided on “The Crusty Crew”. The club enjoyed their pizzas, then Ellen closed the meeting with the motto. The next meeting will be held on Saturday, June 16 at 5 p.m. at the Auburn Hall.
