MacLellan said several councillors have asked him to run for a second term, but he refused to name them. “I feel I’ve got the support of county council,” MacLellan said in a later interview. “I’ve been asked to run again, so councillors must feel I’m doing a good job.” MacLellan said his focus, should he be elected for another term, would be on making Huron County a better place, which is what all of Huron County Council should be focused on, he said. “Council has shown that it’s interested in making changes,” MacLellan said. “They want to make Huron County a better place to work and to live. I’m happy.” It is still unsure what the term MacLellan is vying for will entail. At a strategic planning session in the afternoon of June 6, council dealt with Cuff’s recommendations, one of which being that the term of warden be changed to a two-year term. A preliminary motion made at the meeting (which would still have to be ratified by council) voted in favour of the two-year term, but the change would not take effect until after the 2014 election, so MacLellan vying for re-election would not be affected by the change. THE EDITOR, If you’ve ever had a connection to Brussels Public School, then be sure to mark Saturday, June 16 on your calendar. As this is the final year for Brussels Public School we want to host a big community celebration on that date in honour of our school. The party begins at 3 p.m. on June 16 with visits inside to our “Decades Display” in the classrooms. Outside, there will be giant inflatable activity centres for the kids, as well as a community challenge baseball game. Then a special ceremony at 5 p.m. with guest speakers, school band, choir and a time capsule opening, will precede a big, community Optimists barbecue supper. If you plan to attend, we’d appreciate hearing from you so that we can order ample food. Please call our school secretary, Diana Dolmage at 519-887-9361 or send an e-mail to diandolm@fc.amdsb.ca Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Home of the Blazers, Brussels Public School on Saturday, June 16. Sincerely, Floyd Herman, Vice-Principal Brussels Public School. Huron County Warden Bernie MacLellan wants to take a rain study conducted in Wingham years ago and expand it county-wide. At the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan late lastmonth, MacLellan said he had totravel thousands of miles to hearabout a study that had been conducted in Wingham. The study was conducted by the Insurance Bureau of Canada in 2010. Over 1,000 rain barrels were placed in Wingham in order to reduce the amount of water flowinginto the waste water system duringheavy rainfall. The study was originally supposed to take place in 2009, which is was one of the dryest summers on record, so organizers had to return in 2010 to get an accurate reading. MacLellan said the barrels resulted in a reduction of over 70 percent in overflow to the waste watersystem that summer.MacLellan called the results “remarkable”. He said the study saved money for insurance companies as a result of not having to pay out water damage claims, but there were also significant savings for Wingham as a result. The barrels cost $50 each, which would be rather pricey for all of Huron County, MacLellan said. MacLellan then proposed that if a higher level of government were to come on as a funding partner, the project could be taken on as a county-wide study. If every municipality in Huron County were to reduce costs as aresult of the study, it would be worthmillions in the long run, MacLellansaid. MacLellan said that such a study would work wonders for Lake Huron, which is a priority of many of Huron County’s municipalities, as well as Huron County Council. “Any bypass all ends up in the lake anyhow,” MacLellan told council. “This is an inexpensive method to keep waste water out of the Great Lakes.” MacLellan said he began paying attention to the results when he heard the study was funded by an insurance company, as he says, insurance companies aren’t often in the business of losing money. THE EDITOR, Help us meet patient needs this summer by supporting our upcoming blood donor clinic in Blyth. The need for blood and blood products never takes a vacation. In fact, every minute of every day someone in Canada needs blood. Summer is typically a challenging time for the blood system because people focus on vacation plans and warm weather activities, while blood donation falls from top of mind. Local residents can rally together and help save lives at the next clinic on Wednesday, June 27. The clinic will take place at the Blyth Arena and Community Centre, 377 Gypsy Lane. Hours of operation are 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. To help someone in need go online at www.blood.ca or call 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283) to book an appointment. New donors and walk-ins welcome! It takes many units of blood to save a life. It can take up to five donors a week to help someone with cancer. Let’s rally together to save more lives! On behalf of Canadian patients and their families thank you for your support. Best Regards, Marisa Gatfield Community Development Co-ordinator.
