Make your family part of history
In the July 26 issue, prior to the homecoming celebrations from
July 27-29, The Citizen will be publishing a special
commemorative edition with an extra 1,000 copies. Included will
be pages of family histories. You can tell your family’s history for
as little as $63 for one-eighth of a page (with enough space for a
brief synopsis and small photo of someone from your family’s
history). Or by purchasing a one-quarter page, for $125 or one-
half page for $250, you can give a more complete history.
Just bring in your family story and photograph(s). We’ll quickly
scan your precious photos and return them to you.
Tell your family’s history as part of
The Citizen’s salute to Brussels’ 140th anniversary.
Deadline for submission is Friday, July 13.
(These rates apply to family histories only.)
Brownies beautifywith hort. societyBy Kathy Workman
May and early June found
members of the Brussels and District
Horticultural Society weeding,
edging, mulching flowerbeds at the
butterly garden, the gazebo on
Turnberry and the beds at the
conservation area. Girl Guides and
Brownies are working in partnership
with Horticulture members to plant
and look after flowerbeds at
the mill and in the conservation
park.
After all the hard work it was lots
of fun to hold a plant auction at our
May meeting. Judy Hahn and Jim
Lee managed to pry cash out of
members and guests, have fun doing
it and send satisfied bidders
home with the plant they most
wanted.
There was lots of learning on the
part of both adults and the girls when
the Brussels Brownies joined
members to plant the wooden flower
boxes along Turnberry Street. Some
of the comments and questions were:
Are there worms in here? This dirt is
yucky after you put water in it. Why
can’t we just plant the pot too? – I
bet it would be faster. How come you
know how to do this?
Our thanks to Howard Martin, Jeff
McGavin and Jason Crawford for
their time, expertise and equipment
when we needed help beyond our
resources. Thanks to the Optimist
Club for donating mulch.

General Manager of the Above the Falls Challenge Course Rob Bundy at the Benmiller
Conservation Area in Benmiller taught students from Brussels Public School how people in
different Canadian centres greet each other on June 7. Shown here imitating Vancouver’s

kind of latte in the other are, from left, Daniel Bell, Ryan Jacklin and Teddy Jacklin. (Denny Scott

New eateries in Brussels, Blyth
We’re back from a few days at
McGregor Point, that’s the
provincial park just to the south of
Port Elgin. It’s a great spot for
hearing birds, listening to the lake,
biking, walking and of course
reading. We were there during the
Huron Fringe Bird Festival. There
were many very serious birders in
full birding gear who went on
organized outings in the park as well
as many treks that cover the whole
area, including Tobermory.
Checking the posted list was an
education, as the birds and animals
observed each day were all noted,
we biked, they birded. The variety of
birds in that small area was quite
impressive.
Food is on my mind this morning
as I think about two establishments
in our community. Good reports
were received here about the newest
restaurant in Blyth. The folks who
have enjoyed our population in their
Bed and Breakfast at The Station
House have opened for our
enjoyment at Part II Bistro, just
across from the Blyth Festival. Good
atmosphere, great food, neat details
and competent staff were all
mentioned to me. So keep up the
good work Peter and Sarah Gusso.
The next one for your eating
pleasure is Treats On Turnberry.
This is great – a new store in
Brussels. The nice, new yellow
painted front holds the surprises for
your cravings. Karen and Kelly
Quesenberry have taken the plunge
and are ready to try the business
world. They have many other treats

A NOTE FROM BETTY
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It is very quiet at the Brussels
Legion Branch with no Cadets or
meetings this past week. The only
Branch activity was the fish fry
crew went to Hensall. They fed a
good crowd of 185. The crew was
Rick McDonald, Lloyd, Mabel and
Sharon Glanville, George Adams
and Deb Caan.
We welcome bartender Alisha

She had surgery and is coming
