(Photo submitted) Students continue breaking records at track meetThe F.E. Madill Secondary SchoolTrack and Field Team continued itsonslaught on the record books at theOntario Federation of SchoolAthletic Association (OFSAA) West Regional Track and Field Meet hosted by the University of Windsor. Of the 26 athletes competing for Madill, 17 achieved at least one ‘personal best’. Seven athletes qualified to advance to OFSAA, the high school provincial championships, by placing in the top four positions in their events. En route to pursuing a berth to OFSAA the Madill athletes set an unprecedented seven new school records as well as winning three first place finishes, two second places finishes, and two third place finishes. In the first event of the meet, Julie-Anne Staehli set the tone, taking the lead early and running strongly to win first place, bettering her previous record by a second. The OFSAA silver medalist in the steeplechase continued her record setting pace in the 800-metre lowering the time yet again this season by shaving five seconds off of Janet Wood’s 1980 record and also claiming a berth to OFSAA in the 800-metre race. Distance runner Madeline Yungblut looked in fine form in the senior girls 1,500-metre resetting her record yet again this season with a clocking of 4:48.53. When the gun went off for the Senior girls 3,000- metre, Yungblut was at the front of the pack, running a strong race to win the event in yet another record breaking time of 10:10.58. Since the beginning of this season, she has taken over 40 seconds off the record previously held by Janet Wood in 1980. Luke Dailleboust ran a strong heat and final in the senior boys 110-metre hurdle event. Competing inhis first year as a senior, Dailleboustran the hurdles in 14.70 seconds tobreak a record set by AJ Beasley in 2009 and claim third place and a trip to OFSAA in the event. The relay races are an exciting event at the high school meets. The Madill team had four 4x100-metre teams competing at Regionals. All teams connected on their exchanges performing well. Three teams ran their best times of the season. The senior boys race is often a highlight of the meet because of the highly competitive nature and the speed of the race. Once again, the Madill team of Braydon Pellett, Mike Ballagh, Alex Peters and Luke Dailleboust proved themselves among the best at the meet lowering the school record set last year from 42.96 seconds to 42.83 seconds and winning second place. Peters made his presence felt in the junior boys 100-metre and 200- metre events. He came third in a blanket finish of the 100-metre dash. After dealing with disappointment in his high jump event (not qualifying), he ran with tenacity in the 200-metre race to a convincing win in the event. He broke Tyler Smith’s record of 23.00 (2009) with a time of 22.49 seconds. In the Midget Boys division, Justin McKague leaped over the bar at 1.72-metre to earn second place and a qualifying position at OFSAA. To qualify to compete at this level is an honour and all 26 athletes are to be congratulated on their successes of the season. Seven Madill athletes look forward to competing in eight events at OFSAA held at Thousand Island Secondary school in Brockville next week. Bringing the heat On May 29 the Blyth PeeWee team took on their WIngham counterparts in Minor League baseball action. Pitcher Kyle Bos lead the charge as the teams faced off against each other leading to Blyth coming away with the win. (Vicky Bremner photo)
