Catcher Scott McDonald was the big hitter in the inning, as he clubbed a three-run homerun. The game was called after five innings due to rain. The Brewers put one run across the plate in the second inning and added another run in the top of the third. Wingham tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with Ty Brown connecting for a homerun. Jeff Smith went the five innings on the mound as he recorded a pair of strikeouts. Trevor Seip started on the mound for the Hitmen with Jason Daw taking over in the fifth inning. Bruce Pearn had a double and single for the Brewers with Barry Young rapping out a pair of singles. Scott Leonhardt and Smith contributed one single apiece to the victory. Veteran player Paul Dolmage said it was a good win for the Brewers. “The boys were really stinging the ball,” he said. According to Dolmage, the Brewers look solid again this year. “We have the same 19-man roster we had last season that won the league championship and we are gearing up to win it again this year,” he said. The only addition to the team this year is Brandon McGavin. Next game for the Brewers is Wednesday, June 13 when they host the Blyth Barons on an 8 p.m. contest. The Barons were scheduled to play the Belmore Stingers this past Friday, but the game was postponed because of the rain and will be played at a later date. The Barons host the Brussels Tigers this Friday in a game getting underway at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers were in Sebringville last night (Wednesday) for a game against the Sting. On Sunday, the Tigers travel to Wingham for a 2 p.m. game against the Hitmen. (Jim Brownphoto) Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn The Wingham Golf and Curling Club turned the calendar after a busy month of May and welcomed some much-needed rain for the first three days of June. The rain put a damper on the weekend golf but not the dining room activities. Friday the club held its monthly wing night along with the wedding rehearsal party for Lisa Morrison and Greg Machan. The large turnout kept the kitchen staff running to try to keep up with orders for Cheryl’s extra large and tasty chicken wings. Saturday night the dining room was host of the 60th anniversary supper of Helen and Bob McKague. The family were treated to a roast beef buffet. Sunday morning Michele Nixon and Tyson Glassier held their morning after stag brunch also in the dining lounge. The over 40 guests enjoyed an all-you-can-eat breakfast. In golf action on Wednesday, May 30 the senior men had 23 golfers take part. Warren Rich claimed first place with Glen McMichael second and Clayt Ruppel third. Grant Currie took home the longest putt prize while Don Bone again shot low round of the day. On Thursday night men’s action 68 golfers set a new record for golfers on a clear but cool night. Trevor Hopf had the hot hand with birdies on the last three holes to shoot a 37 and claim low round for the night. Steve Nixon also had his A game with his iron play taking away both closest to the pin awards. Other winners were longest putts, Ken Mathers, Wayne Whytock, Terry Anger and Matt Rozendal while Pete DeJong and Doug Rathwell went home with the hidden score prizes. The doctor recruitment tournament to be held on Saturday, June 16 is still looking for up to four teams to play in this well run tournament for a great cause. Please contact the club if you can form a team or want to play with someone. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS The annual kids golf camp is scheduled to run July 2 to July 6. There is still room for a few more children and the club is also looking for volunteers to help teach the kids some basic elements of this great game. www.culliganwater.ca (519) 379-9765 RICK DUPUIS Brussels Mites earn one-hitter Wade Machan and Christopher Pennington combined for an 11- strikeout, one-hitter, as the Brussels Mites “B” opened the season on the road with a win in Belgrave.
