It looks like the size of the Hullett Central Public School student body is going to grow a little bit more than school officials expected. Central Huron Councillor Marg Anderson reported to her fellow councillors at the May 31 Committee of the Whole meeting that originally 70 students were expected to enroll at Hullett Central from Blyth Public School. That number has now grown to 90 students, she said. Anderson attended a recent transition committee meeting where the numbers were updated. Anderson says it’s looking like one portable will have to be brought to Hullett Central to accommodate the excess students. The Huron Bruce New Democrats held their Annual General Meeting at the Regional Equine and Agricultural Centre of Huron (REACH) in Clinton on Tuesday, May 29. A successful soup supper was followed by guest speaker, Gina Barber, past member of London Board of Control, now with London Civic Watch and member-at-large with the Ontario NDP Executive. Gina shared an inspirational message on the gains the party has made and the direction it is going. She reminded the crowd that the NDP takes its policies from the membership and not from the leadership. All the strong work now being done by Andrea Horwath and Thomas Mulcair is based on direction from NDP members. The Annual General Meeting saw a number of changes in the executive. After six years as president of the Huron Bruce NDP, Clinton area native and retired school principal, Willi Laurie, stepped down from her position. She will be moving on to Ontario NDP Provincial Council and the past president’s position and looks forward to contributing in that capacity. Previous to her role as president, Willi was secretary to the riding association for 14 years and has contributed to the party since the early 1990s. Willi has also acted in the course of that time as CFO for one election campaign and as campaign manager for four. During Laurie’s tenure the Huron Bruce NDP has been steadily growing in support and last year, finished in second place in the federal election. New to the president’s role is John Rich of Southampton. John trained as a mechanic in his youth, earned a journalism degree from Ryerson University, and is now a full-time firefighter. He is married to Tara, a doctor in Southampton, and is a father of three sons. With John’s acclamation the Huron Bruce NDP fulfills its mandate to rotate its leadership between counties. There is no doubt John will have the skills, energy and knowledge required to fulfill this demanding role. An executive of about 20 members was elected to the Huron Bruce NDP with Gina Barber running the proceedings. Other executive members include Grant Robertson, Secretary; Mike Dunn, Provincial Treasurer, Fran McQuail, Federal Treasurer; John Beardsley, Huron Vice-President; Tony McQuail and Diane Klopp, Membership. Also elected were Provincial Council Alternates Jan Johnstone and Joe Laurie, Members-at-Large Kristin Beaton, Gary Kilgore, Klaas Schmidts, Keith Cleveland, Greg Schmidt, and Cheryl Murray, and ONDY youth reps Scarlett Raczycki, Anneke Stryker and Marije Stryker. Anyone interested in joining the Huron Bruce NDP is welcome to contact Tony McQuail at mcqufarm@hurontel.on.ca or 519- 528-2493, or contact any executive member in your area.
