Forest fires hit close to home for area families
The forest fires in the north have a
couple of local families watching the
news carefully. The families of
Shaun Walker and Erin (Mitchell)
Walker are keeping a close eye on
the news and trying to keep in touch
with the kids. Shaun and Erin and
boys Kaden and Jack, live in
Kirkland Lake and the fires are lessthan three kilometres from the town. The family is on high alert to moveif the word comes. They haveeverything important ready to go in a
moment’s notice and are already to
move furniture if they have time.
Good news arrived that the north has
had a good rain, but the danger has
not passed yet. One little extra
prayer should be said for our
northern friends.
The members of the Walton
Women’s Institute attended the
District Annual Institute meeting at
the Listowel Agricultural Building
last week. They combined with the
Majestic Women’s Institute of
Brussels to perform a rhythm band
for some entertainment. Margaret
McInroy also sang for thoseattending. Members of the WaltonInstitute attending includedMargaret, Helen Craig, MarjoryHumphries, Marion Godkin, Ruth
Axtman and Brenda Perrie.
The turnout for Neil and Marie
McGavin’s 50th wedding
anniversary open house was
fantastic. It was held at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre
and the place was full.
The guest book signed by those
attending must have recorded over
450 names of family, friends,
business associates and customers of
the McGavins. Neil and Marie
greeted everyone and the pair looked
amazing. Hard to believe they have
been married for 50 years. Their
family of Brian, Cathy, Jeff andHeather and members of theirfamilies could be seen catching upwith many of those attending fromnear and far.
The social afternoon had folks
enjoying refreshments and a
delicious array of appetizers
provided by Grace Campbell
catering. The colours of black and
turquoise with beautiful white floral
accents made the room look very
festive.
The entire McGavin family was
picked up by the two luxurious limos
that held all 35 family members
from the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre. They were
transported to Thyme on 21
restaurant in Goderich for a family
dinner. They had a wonderful, relaxing dinner and evening. Thelimos dropped everyone off at therespective homes at the end of thenight. Congratulations Neil and
Marie.
There was a wonderful turnout for
the celebration of Edna Pearson’s
85th birthday party held at the
Brussels United Church on Sunday.
Edna’s girls, Nancy from California,
Joyce of London and Janet of Owen
Sound kept Edna busy. Edna was in
her glory visiting with her Brussels
friends and showing off her family. I
bet she was a very tired lady on
Monday. Congratulations and happy
birthday Edna.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Rachel Grosvenor,
Deanna Searle, Rod Fritz, Thea
Rijkhoff, Marisa Curreri, Krysta
Clarke, Geri-Lee Godkin, Trevor
Sutcliffe, Johanna Blake, Pat Dalton,
Adam Forbes, Erin Baan and Rob
Shortreed to finish up May. Happy
birthday to all.

PEOPLE AROUNDWALTON
The weather keeps teasing with
the hint of rain, but we have had very
little in our area in the last week. The
crops are growing despite of the fact,
but a nice shower would do
everything a world of good.
Great news for the Stevenson
family. Leah Stevenson won her
second Masters Tournament in
Newfoundland at the beginning of
May. She is a member of the Girls
Combo from the Molesworth Youth
Bowling Canada team and travelled
to St. John’s to represent Southern
Ontario at the 2012 Youth Bowling
Canada National Championships.
They had an undefeated record of 7-
0, and the girls are the 2012 Five Pin
Girls Combo Team National
Champions. The team consisted of
Senior Girl Ashley Payne, Junior
Girl Sami Weiler and Bantam Girl
Leah Stevenson. They are coached
by Dale Payne.
The Stevenson family had quite an
eventful journey to the East Coast.
The family flew from Toronto to St.
John’s but the fog was so thick they
could not land. They were redirected
to Halifax to refuel and then were
flown back to Toronto. They
managed to find numerous
connecting flights for just Leah and
mom Veronica to get them to the
tournament on time, but the rest of
the family had to wait. The men, dad
Steve and brothers Wyatt and
William, managed to secure a flight
the next day and arrived in time to
see Leah bowl only once for the
championship. Because of the fog,
175 kids did not make it to St. John’s
for the tournament, so organizers
had to cut the tournament by half.
The family is very proud of Leah’s
accomplishments this year winning
two tournaments. The family spent a
few extra days touring the area
around St. John’s before returning
home. Congrats to Leah and her
teammates.
The Brussels birthday girls held
their monthly luncheon at JR’s on
Tuesday. The birthday girls this
month were Mary Bryans, Marie
McCutcheon, Isabelle Wheeler and
Rene Richmond. They enjoyed a
delicious dinner and were
congratulated by those attending
including Leona Armstrong, Sandra
Cable, Bev Palmer, Jane Hall, Merle
Cousins, Alice Marks, Betty
McCutcheon, Marg Work, Nora
Stephenson, Laura Barbour, Audrey
Cardiff, Olga Speiran and Betty
Campbell. A merry time was had by
all.
The garage sales around the
village of Brussels were very well
attended on Saturday. The morning
had all the streets very busy but by
early afternoon, it seemed to slow
down. Those I spoke to, seemed very
pleased with their sales.
The Glanville house is moving
ahead in leaps and bounds since last
report. The windows are in, the
bricking is done and it is very lovely.
The inside is also progressing well.
Congratulations to Paul and
Amanda Linton on the birth of a son,
Miles Ryan. Proud grandparents for
the second time this month are Dave
and Brenda Linton.
Stevenson wins second Masters Tourney
Winners once again
Leah Stevenson, front, was a winner once again at her second Masters Tournament in
Newfoundland earlier this month. Stevenson was part of a girls combo team out of
Molesworth Youth Bowling Canada representing southern Ontario in St. John’s. The girls went
through the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record, earning them the title of 2012 five-pin girls
combo team national champions. From left: Coach Dale Payne, Senior Ashley Payne, Junior
Sami Weiler. In front, upside down is Stevenson. (Photo submitted)
Duff’s anniversary in 10 days
Duff’s United Church had guest
pastor, Rev. Richard Hall
conducting service on Sunday. His
reflection was entitled, “Launching
Your Balloon”. Karen Hoegy
greeted those attending. The
scripture reader was Shelley
McGavin. The congregation
enjoyed the musical talents of
Shelley and Graeme Craig as they
sang a duet “Hallelujah”. A social
time was held following the service.
Announcements included the
anniversary weekend is just 10 days
away and the deadline for
confirming your attendance at the
barbecue is June 1. Please contact
Neil McGavin of Phyllis Mitchell if
planning on attending the barbecue.
We want to ensure everyone gets
fed. Family history displays or
memorabilia must be dropped off at
the church no later than June 3.
They are to be display ready.
Volunteers will be setting up on
Monday morning and many hands
will make the job go faster. Helen
Craig would appreciate knowing if
you are planning to place flowers in
memory of loved ones and those
wishing to make a memorial
donation towards a tree, can do so
by sending your donation to Glenda
Morrison as soon as possible.
Cookbooks are still available and
will be for sale on the weekend.
