Forty-six years after its closure, students from SS1 Morris Township School will be gathering to remember their time at the old one- room schoolhouse. On June 30 former students of the retired schoolhouse will gather at Blyth’s Lions Park to recall and reminisce their days as students. “The event is open to everyone who attended the school,” organizer Helen Hummel said. The event has taken a couple years to start according to Hummel’s partner in the project Carol Gross. “A couple years ago Helen and I were talking about people that we went to school with there and we remembered that we hadn’t spoken to some of them since we left the school,” she said. “We decided that we wanted to see these people so we figured we would plan a reunion.” Gross said that they had wanted to do the reunion for the 45th anniversary but hadn’t realized ithad arrived so soon. They said theydidn’t want to wait until the 50th infour years so they planned it for this year. “We formed a committee from people we knew and we just started digging,” Hummel said. “We’ve been digging and digging to try and find old students and families. A lot of them stuck around here but a lot of them have moved to other places as well.” Gross said the event has garnered a good response so far and that they have a lot of people contacted from the local area and some from further afield as well including past students from Kitchener, Waterloo, London, Hamilton, Windsor and St. Thomas. “We’re getting in touch with people however we can,” Hummel explained. “Sometime we have to go through family members to find more elderly individuals.” The two said that they are also finding that a lot of the students are deceased including those their own Morris school reunion coming in June Reunion ready Helen Hummel, left, and Carol Gross are ready for the reunion of their alma mater: SS1 Morris Township School. The pair have worked hard organizing a reunion to be held on June 30 at Blyth Lions Park to find out how their former classmates, neighbours and friends are faring.
