Today, May 23 is track and field
day at Hullett Central Public School.
If you receive your paper in time this
may remind you to drop by the
school and check out the activities.
Rain date is tomorrow, Thursday. Be
sure to ask the young people in your
world how they fared at the event.
They like us all to be connected to
their world.
The Grade 8 class at Hullett
Central is raising funds for their
class trip. This year they areplanning a stay at Camp Celtic onthe Bruce Peninsula.
Lorne Dale stopped by last week
to tell me that his scratch ticket had
the bells ringing at the Blyth Variety
Store on May 9. He won $50,000
this time. You may remember he and
Geraldine won $100,000 just a few
years ago on a ticket bought in
Goderich. Perhaps we all need to
shake hands with Lorne in hopes the
luck will rub off. The couple have to
travel to the Western Fair Casino in
London to collect their cheque.
Congratulations!
You might want to get a front row
space to watch the ducks swim this
Sunday at Wallace’s corner
beginning at 1:30 p.m. Have you
bought a duck yet from the
Londesborough Lions? The men
will also be grilling hot dogs that
afternoon.
Looking for a change of pace?
Why not an evening of music? Thereare still a few tickets available forthe cabaret presented by the Blyth
Festival singers this Saturday
evening, May 26 at the Stanley
Complex in Varna. Tickets for
“Broadway, Brass and Blues” are
$25. Featured guests of the Blyth
choir are soloist Anne Potter and the
Suncoast Brass Quartet. Doors open
at 6 p.m. and dinner is served at 6:30
p.m. Emcee is Duncan MacGregor.
The event always includes
wonderful silent auction items.
If you travelled along London
Road between Blyth and Clinton on
Tuesday, you may have come upon
Louie’s Grandpa Bob walking.
Louie Facca, now four years old,
was diagnosed before his third
birthday with Duchenne muscular
dystrophy. Currently there is no cure
for this progressive degenerative
terminal disease. The disease affects
boys almost exclusively and they
rarely see their 20th birthday. This disease caught the attentionof people in southwestern Ontario a
number of years ago when John
Davidson of London walked miles
on behalf of his son Jesse. Jesse beat
the odds living until he was 29. The
Jesse’s Journey Foundation
continues to raise funds for research
into this disease. One hundred
percent of monies raised by Grandpa
Bob’s walk will go to research in
hopes of finding help for Louie.
There are 35 to 40 types of muscular
dystrophy and of the types, I was
told, Louie’s is the worst. Fifty per
cent of Duchenne diagnosises are
from brand new mutations of the
disease while the other 50 per cent is
hereditary.
Bob and his support
family/volunteers stopped in
Londesborough at the post office for
their lunch break and I had a chance
to talk with them. The group make a
small detour and visited at Hullett
Central Public School during the
morning recess break to talk with
staff and pupils.
Eight months of planning
preceded the walk which started in
Owen Sound on May 7. Bob’s route
through southwestern Ontario will
have him walking 500 kilometres by
May 30 when he finishes in London.
He walks approximately 20 km a
day. His Tuesday walk started at
Hallahan Farms north of Blyth.
Later on Tuesday he walked intoClinton accompanied by the ClintonFire Department and then headed
east to Seaforth along Hwy. 8. His
meandering walk will take him
through Stratford, Tavistock,
Ingersoll, Strathroy and on into
London so you may encounter the
group somewhere else in your
travels.
