(Denny Scott photo) First farmers’ market goes wellThe Brussels Farmers’ Marketinaugural day of business went very well according to market manager Sarah Harron. “I’m very pleased with theturnout,” she said shortly afteropening the event to the public onFriday, May 18. “We have a goodvariety of produce vendors and local artisans and I think it’s going to go very well.” Harron said that even the weather, which was sunny and warm, seemedto be lending support to the event. While business came in busier andlighter periods, Harron said that she estimated about 150 people coming through the market and buying so much that some vendors needed to restock as they ran out of goods part- way through the market. “We’re very happy that it went so well,” she said. The market, which will be held every Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. until mid-October, was made possible through the Ontario Trillium Foundation who has committed to a $22,400 grant over a three year period to cover the operational expenses. By Denny ScottThe Citizen Paul Dawson bet that his charges, the members of the Brussels Cadets, couldn’t fill a 15 litre jug with change, and he bet wrong. The reviewing officer for the Brussels Cadets stated that he would walk from Brussels to Walton if his troop could fill the jug in three months. “I originally thought that they would have the thing half full,” he said. “Then I’d tell them that they were good to get that far and that they could try next year. I guess I was wrong.” The idea originally came from the support committee which motivated the Cadets to come up with ways to raise money for the group which boasts 42 members. Dawson’s walk started on Saturday, May 19 at 9 a.m. at the Brussels Legion and ended in Walton, however, by the time he started his journey, he was far from alone. “I figured that there would be about 20 to 25 members of the Brussels Cadets joining,” he said. “Once they realized that I was going Dawson walks to Walton Give us a call 519-887-9061 Fax 519-335-3570 R.R. 2 Bluevale It’s Gardening Time • Natural Mulch • Screened Topsoil • Regular Topsoil (call ahead to make arrangements) • Sand • Gravel • Fill • Loading & Hauling • Bulldozing • Excavating Delivery Available You Pickup John CONSTRUCTION LTD. Do you ever try to figure out which month of the year is your favourite? Give it a whirl and see if you can get it down to two or three. Worth some quiet time thinking anyway. Last Tuesday evening the library was the place for promotion of the farmers’ market. A nice crowd gathered to hear details, clarify facts with the vendors, answer questions for possible sellers and promote the new market. Huron East Economic Development Officer Jan Hawley, Sarah Harron and the board were present to encourage timid vendors and note the details. If you think Rene Richmond is off kilter lately, it’s because of all the time she has spent on the phone talking to people about the market potential. Thanks Rene. Like all new ventures, more questions than answers are firm, but if the future is ours then we need to take hold and support. By the time you read this, the first market day will be over and ideas to make it even better will be in the works. You missed it. The Almost Famous Players held their annual show last week in the Heritage Theatre in Wingham. Sold out was the gift they received for both nights showing the love and support that is theirs from community. This production is marvelous when you think of the players in all the roles.
