Read Rhea Hamilton Seeger’s Gardening column on the Huron Home and Garden Guide section of our website www.northhuron.on.ca May 4 North Huron Township Councillors sat down with Huron- Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson to discuss the issues that face the township and what kind of support councillors need from her. “We had a good back and forth discussion with Lisa on a number of the topics we felt were important,” Reeve Neil Vincent explained. “I thank her for taking the time to go through all those things with us.” A press release from the township elaborated on the issues that were discussed, highlighting the following issues as items that were dealt with: • A need for funding to improve financial sustainability. • The Drummond Report’s recommendations. • Full-day kindergarten programs and what impacts it will have on municipally-owned and operated child care services. • The Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund’s reduced transfers. • Issues directly affecting North Huron such as amalgamations, doctor recruitment expenses, rural severances, hospital funding, alternative energy, downtown revitalization, arts and culture funding and the local airport. • Requiring provincial decisions to be evaluated from a rural standpoint before implementation. “We need the provincial government to understand and respond to the specific issues and challenges facing North Huron and other small rural municipalities,” Vincent said in a press release regarding the meeting. “I know Lisa will continue to raise our concerns in the Ontario Legislature as well as promote North Huron’s strengths and opportunities with key ministers and decision-makers.” Vincent said, in a following council meeting, that Thompson has a very good understanding of where the township’s interest lies and what its thoughts are on the aforementioned issues and believes she will continue to represent the area well.
