The farmers are keeping busy with
the planting. Most have the corn
planted and with the bit of rain and
the warm weather on the weekend,
the corn has popped up in many
fields. Seed drills outnumber the
corn planters in the field now, as
many are now planting the soybean
crop. The majority of fields have
been worked and those that have not,
will probably have white beans
planted in them closer to June. The
farmers now place their trust in the
elements. Will there be enough rain
or too much rain, or rain when it is
needed, hot or too hot or not enough
heat, sun or no sun, bugs or no bugs,
a late frost or not? Farmers have
invested thousands of dollars in
seed, fertilizer, fuel and fixing
(something always breaks) with the
hopes that it will be a good year
weatherwise. Farmers are the
ultimate gamblers when it comes to
the production of food, so everyone
should thank a farmer today!
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of Marie McTaggart, who
passed away last week. Marie
almost made it her 101st birthday on
May 18 and was a remarkable
woman for her years. I had not seen
Marie since November, but she
always knew who I was and that I
wrote an article for the paper. She
will be missed by her children Neil,
Dale, Katharine and Ruth and their
families. Our condolences to all the
extended families.
Our sympathies are extended to
Wilda Higgins on the loss of her
sister Leila Hay. She had been a
resident of Queensway Nursing
Home and will be missed by her two
daughters Brenda and Gwendolyn.
Our condolences to her extended
family.
The senior students of many
schools are heading off for their year
end trips. The Grade 8 students of
Seaforth Public School went to
Camp Celtic, near Wiarton, last
week. There were about 45 Grade 8
students enjoying the four-day
“vacation” along with another 150
students from other schools. They
had fairly good weather, with a little
rain Wednesday morning, but cold
nights. One young man reports he
had to wear some of his clothes to
bed to keep warm. They slept in
cabins with six students to one
chaperone. They spent time
swimming (brrrr), building sand
castles, playing capture the flag in
teams and learning how to build an
outdoor shelter in the woods, as
some of the activities. They report
the food was good and the dining
hall was huge. The young people
from our area included Nic Zwep,
Rebecca Fougere, Lucas Godkin and
Allison Braecker.
We are pleased to report that Bob
Alexander is home from hospital.
Bob suffered a head injury last
week that required hospitalization
for a few days. We hope he is taking
it easy and is on the road to recovery.
We hope everyone enjoyed a
happy Mother’s Day. Members of
our family went to my mother’s in
Mitchell, where the rest of my
family gathered to enjoy Chinese
food for dinner. No one had to cook,
so it was great. Everyone in
attendance had their picture taken
with Mom. Many times there are
group photos taken, but not always
individual ones taken. They will benice to have for the photo album.Changes on Brussels Line areongoing. The property on the corner
of Brussels Line and Cranbrook
Road has seen the ground cleared
and the foundation for a new home
put in. The home is for David and
Liana Baker. Heading towards
Walton, the property on the corner of
St. Michaels Road has changed
owners. The new owners have taken
down the pines, other trees and barn
and have worked the land to plant a
crop. The farm on the corner of
Moncrieff Road and Brussels Line
(McDonalds) has footings and walls
for new shed poured and the
property on the corner of Walton
Road (Baan) also has the footings
and walls ready for a new shed.
Things just keep happening and
changing.

Organic open house
Tony McQuail, left, opened his organic farm on Saturday, May 12 to show people how it works.
Aside from the abundance of information one could learn about the practices of organic
farming, visitors could also take a tour around the farm on a horse-drawn wagon. (Jim Brown photo)
