Wendy Martin returns from Laos
The long weekend is nearly here.
An extra day to enjoy the warm
weather, a few hours to do as you
please, time to appreciate the joy of
a long weekend. So if it’s camping
or gardening or setting off fire
crackers, enjoy the leisure.
Mother’s Day was celebrated inmany homes on the weekend, aslong as schedules permitted. Whenwork involves 24-hour scheduling, alternate plans are always needed. A
little give and take and then the
children of all ages have marked the
day. Attending church with mom is
always a great gift, as well walks to
the park, flowers and meals together.
No matter the gesture, mom will tell
you it’s just right.
If you see a familiar, but
questionable face around town in the
next few weeks, let me help. Wendy
Martin is visiting with her parents
Howard and Alice to catch up on all
things Brussels. Laos is Wendy’s
home country for now, where she isadministrator for the MennoniteCentral Committee. In her capacity, she co-ordinates several projects, that come at the request of the
Laotian government. Wendy has
been there for nearly four years and
seeing improvement in the lives of
the people in this rural area is
encouraging. English as a second
language, agricultural school and
irrigation projects are the important
ones right now. Working with a
Communist government and paying
people with rice for digging ditches
seem foreign to us but that is just
part of Wendy’s life at this time. So

At the Branch
Legion hosts dart finals
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Brussels Legion Branch had a
quiet week with the normal events
such as Cadets and pipe band
practice during the week.
The last Friday night supper was
held with about 35 people enjoying a
great meal. It was a potluck of a
variety of dishes like roast beef,
ham, sweet and sour meatballs,
turkey creole and chicken breast
prepared by Jo-Ann and her helpers,
Deb Caan and Mabel Glanville.
Helen Dobson provided her usual
bevy of delicious pies for dessert.
When the meal was over, George
Cousins said some very kind words
about the Legion and the dedicated
cooks who have worked at providing
the meals this year. He thanked us
for our hard work and the many
delicious meals. Everyone
applauded the remarks. Jo-Ann
thanked George and thanked
everyone for supporting the Branch
by attending the meals. The meals
have been prepared, served and
provided by Jo-Ann McDonald, Deb
Caan, Mary Bradshaw, Helen
Dobson and Mabel Glanville. The
ladies are taking a break for the
summer and will return in the fall.
The men and women of the Men’s
Huron County Dart League and the
Ladies’ Bluewater Dart League
joined together on Saturday to
participate in a tournament day to
finish the season. The nice weather
kept the numbers taking part rather
low, but they enjoyed the day. A
banquet followed with close to 40
enjoying a roast beef dinner served
by the Branch. Branch members Jo-
Ann McDonald, Judy Lee and
Mabel Glanville worked for the
Branch and Randy White, Andy
Overholt and Alisha Whitelaw
looked after bartending duties.
The Branch will be kept busy with
fish fry events again this summer
and the Branch will host its own fry
on May 26. Comrades will be asked
