our area churches were taken by
members so the ministers could
attend. They and the lay delegates
dealt with the business of our church
today. Along the way from Friday to
Sunday, we had lots of time and
reason to celebrate. It was the old
story of the glass half full versus the
negative, that is so easy to pass
along.
A jazz band for all the sessions
gave the business and music a great
lift.
Good news stories more balanced
the reality of diminishing resources
available. The population blip of the
1950s has left us with too many
buildings to house members.
Great stories for specific places
were shared that gave reason to
dream.
Rev. Gary Clark installed the new
president, Rev. Paul Browning from
London. Gary’s theme was “Where
are You on the Wave” leading us into
Paul’s “Finding the Treasure”. So if
your minister is stepping a little
higher this week with renewed hope
for the future, feel free to ask what
you could do to help. It will make
their day.
Alma Watson has left town. She
and Ralph are spending a few days
in Edmonton and Hythe, Alberta.
Kaye Dane came as the new teacher
to Orange Hill in Howick Township
several years ago and she and Alma
have maintained their friendship. So
the lively conversations this week in
Alberta will be covering nine
decades and two lifetimes in a
changing Canada. – two of the good

Continued from page 3days Jonah was in the whale’sstomach until the whale spit him outon shore. Jonah changed his mindand obeyed God and went to
Nineveh to help get the people to
repent. During the last verse of the
singing of “Jesus Bids Us Shine”,
the children went downstairs to
Sunday School class.
The scriptures were from Jonah 1:
1-17, 2: 1-9, Psalm 62: 5-12 and
Mark 1: 14-20. The choir sang the
anthem, “Wade in the Water” with
choir members singing the solo
parts. The message to the adults was
“Reflection and Quiet Reflection”.
A pantomime was performed
telling the story of Jonah and theWhale. Those taking part wereFloyd Herman as Jonah, ElizabethMoffatt as the wind, Ruth AnnKirkby as the captain, Rick Elliott as
the whale and David Onn as the
church. This pantomime was also
being presented at London
Conference. The offering was
received followed by the offertory
hymn, “We Give Thee But Thine
Own” and the offertory prayer, the
prayers for the people and the
singing of the last hymn, “Come Let
Us Sing” and the benediction.
Everyone was invited for coffee,
treats and fellowship after the
service.

On the road
Gary Clark of the Blyth United Church, right, and Ewan Simeon, a member of the United
Church from Listowel joined a group of nearly 10 people who chose to ride their bike down
to the United Church’s London conference last weekend, including another participant from
Goderich. Clark said the inspiration behind the initiative was to show that it’s an option worth
considering and that it can be done. Under overcast skies the pair began for London just
before 4 p.m. on Friday. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
