The Citizen, 2012-05-10, Page 8PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2012. The Wingham Golf and Curling Club enjoyed a busy week to help kick off the 2012 golf season. On Sunday, May 6 around 500 hungry patrons attended the annual spring barbecue. Jeff Cardiff did a great job catering and head barbecue committee organizer Mary Houghton, with help from several volunteers, did a fantastic job putting this event together to make sure everyone went home happy and full. Friday night Cheryl, Candace and Elyse served close to 800 large tasty wings to make opening wing night a huge success. On Wednesday, May 2 the club hosted a retirement party for two long-time members of the Wingham Hospital. The 63 guests were treated to a roast beef and chicken buffet in the dining lounge. In golf action, the Wednesday morning senior men had golfers hit the links. Jeff Lockridge took home first place with Lloyd Lamont second and Glenn McMichael third. Gerry Edwards was winner of the longest putt. The Thursday night men had 44 golfers out only to have a severe rain storm stop play. The last four or five groups out were about 20 minutes short of finishing their rounds before the rain put a damper on them and their round. Don Bone shot a 38 for low round of the night. The draw winners were: Russ Danbrook, Shorty Long, Terry Armstrong, Aart de Vos, Brett Martin, Neil Bieman and Ross Peacock. OUT OF BOUNDS The spring barbecue again was a good example of how several people working together can lead to great things. From ticket sellers, Jack and his table crew set-up-and-take-down group, pie servers, bartenders, cart taxi drivers, group organizers, staff of club and many other superb volunteers all helped to make the day successful. McKague, an F.E. Madill Secondary School Student, took gold during this race and eventually earned several medals at this competition and a subsequent one in London on May 2.
