Advertising their creation
Grade 6/7 students at Blyth Public School under the guidance of Ms Clark got to flex their
creative muscles twice over as they first made inventions out of different foods and glue then
used those products as a springboard for their persuasive advertising writing project. Shown

Students prep forEQAO testing
My ‘roses’ for this week happened
when I might have least expected
them. We had occasion to be at the
Stratford hospital last Friday
evening and exited through the east
garden to the parking lot.
The minute we stepped outside we
were greeted by the heady perfume
from about six flowering trees, quite
probably flowering almond trees. I
wanted just to linger and enjoy and
thought how soothing and hopeful
the garden would be to those who
were dealing with illness.
We have discovered “Scoopers”,
an ice cream parlour on Erie Street
in Stratford and took the opportunity
to have a treat before heading home.
As we came out with our waffle
cones we noticed a small dog on a
leash waiting very expectantly. His
owner came along with a doggie
cone and it was fun to see just how
quickly that treat disappeared. His
little tongue never stopped until
every morsel was gone.
Fairness, treating everyone in a
just and accepting manner, is the
character attribute receiving
attention at Hullett Central Public
School this month.
Acknowledgment for exemplifying
honesty during April was given to 31
pupils during the May assembly last
week.
Pupils in Grades 3 and 6 will be
doing EQAO testing the last week of
May. The results of these province-
wide tests determine school and
board goals for the years ahead. If
you have a young family member in
these grades, be reassuring and
encouraging as they prepare.
Mrs. Ryan, who is on maternity
leave from Hullett Central Public
School has a new wee man in her
life, Bo Jeffery Hutchison.
Congratulations from the Hullettcommunity!

If you missed all the hype about
the weekend’s celestial event and
wondered why the full moon on
Saturday was so bright, here’s the
skinny. It was a very spectacular
sight in many areas but we were
dealing with some cloud cover and
didn’t get the full benefit of this once
a year event.
The moon was at its perigee, its
closest proximity to the earth for this
year, just 356,955 kilometres from
us. Because of its proximity to the
earth it appeared 14 per cent larger
than usual and dubbed a
‘supermoon’.
Nicaraguan experiences highlight poverty
Harry Lear chose an appropriate
song to sing at Londesborough
United Church on Sunday, May 6,
“The Little Village Church by the
Way”. Giving piano accompaniment
was wife, Gail.
“Sharing the Good News” was the
title of Terry Fletcher’s message that
morning. It centred on the story from
Acts 8:26-40. The apostle Philip
who had been teaching Christ’s
message in the area around
Jerusalem, was instructed by an
angel to go to Egypt. He was leaving
familiar surroundings and heading
off through the desert, not knowing
why, into a new district. He
encountered the chief of financial
affairs for Ethiopia, a very powerful
man, riding in his chariot and
reading the words of Isaiah the
prophet.
Philip sensed this was the mission
God had sent him on, to instruct and
baptize this Ethiopian. The
Ethiopian man sensed that Philip
could help him understand the
writings he was reading. A Jew and
an Ethiopian brought together by
God to show that His love and
message is for everyone. The
Ethiopian shared that message with
his countrymen and there remains a
strong Christian church in Ethiopia
today.
Philip had faith in his calling, was
ready to do God’s bidding and was
enthusiastic about his message. He
knew God was guiding him.
Terry noted that if Christians find
themselves in unusual circumstances
they need to consider it may be
God’s way of nudging them. He has
decided they are the right person to
make a difference in that situation.
Terry asked congregants if they are
ready to hear God’s voice and pass
on His message of love and caring to
others. The responsive psalm, Psalm
148, is a call for the universe to
praise God.
There were two mission stories
that Sunday. One came during the
children’s time at the front. In
response to Mr. Fletcher’s question
to them. “What would you do if you
didn’t have to go to school?” Play
was the overwhelming response.
Terry had been attending a
conference that weekend and he
went on to tell them that he met two
friends there who are living and
working in a small village in
Nicaragua. Deb works in the church
there and Don works in the school.
Terry explained to the children that
Nicaraguan children only go to
school if the churches run those
schools. Education, especially in
rural areas, is not provided by the
government.
Terry pointed out to the children
that in Nicaragua the children who
can’t go to school must work, and
not play all day. The money given to
the United Church Mission and
Service Fund supports this and other
such schools all over the world.
Marjorie Duizer, who gave the
regular Minute for Missions, pointed
out that mission and service monies
are also used to help Canadians
living in poverty. Her report was
about the Chalmers Centre near
Guelph which offers food to those in
need. This particular centre has
made it a priority to offer healthful
food items and runs a garden for
