Plans were made to host an interdenominational gathering on Thursday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Rev. JoAnn Todd, presently serving Anglican Parishes in Hanover and Walkerton. Rev. Todd had been invited by her bishop to attend a Status of Women event that was held at the United Nations in New York in February. Over 4,000 women from around the world attended this event which dealt with Empowerment of Rural Women in Poverty. The Belgrave UCW is extending an invitation to women in the surrounding areas of Blyth, Brussels, Wingham and Belgrave to attend this meeting. The UCW also decided to send a donation through to the Huron-Perth Presbyterial to support the National UCW 50th anniversary Morogoro project which will help train midwives to help young women giving birth, who have suffered female genital mutilation. A letter will also be drafted to our local MP to address the Shari’a Law that would allow that to continue happening in Canada. The worship was given by Beryl MacGowan and her theme was Just As I Am. The roll call was to name a Bible Story that you liked and could remember. Muriel Coultes was in charge of the program and she had three interpretations read of Mark 11: 15- 18, which is the story of Jesus overturning the tables in the synagogue. The women acted out the buying and selling of merchandise and the noise of the animals, while two of the women attempted to pray. A discussion followed and we realized how difficult it was to pray and why Jesus put them out of the temple. The next UCW regular meeting will be held at the home of Pat Hunking in Blyth on Tuesday, June 5 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting closed with the benediction and grace. Lunch and a social time around the table followed. MEETING NOTICE MUNICIPALITY OF MORRIS-TURNBERRY The upcoming Council and Committee meetings for the Municipality of Morris-Turnberry will be held: Monday May 14 at 7:30 pm Special Council Meeting Tuesday May 15 at 7:30 pm Regular Council Meeting Thursday May 24 at 7:00 pm Public Meeting to discuss Fire Options ~ Knights of Columbus Hall, Wingham Missing councillor ties vote With one councillor absent, it proved impossible to get a decision on one issue at Morris-Turnberry council, April 17. Council was considering two requests for grants – $500 for the Huron Arts and Heritage Networks and $250 from the Wingham Golf and Curling Club (WGCC) – which found councillors divided. Mayor Paul Gowing started the discussion by saying he’d like to see the municipality do something to support the arts. In the case of the WGCC donation, it wasn’t the size of the donation that matter as much as the expression of support, he said. But Deputy-Mayor Jason Breckenridge said the budget had already been finalized for grants. “Would you take out something else [to fund these requests]?” he asked. Councillor John Smuck pointed out the WGCC is one of the few recreation venues within the municipality. “It’s a facility we’d hate to lose,” agreed Gowing. But Councillor Jamie McCallum made a motion to file the requests. With Councillor David Baker absent, the vote was a 4-4 deadlock, which is recorded as a defeat. After that defeat, Councillor Neil Warwick made a motion to approve the grants, but reduced the amount for the Huron Arts and Heritage Networks to $250. Again the vote was tied, resulting in a defeat. Council finally could pass one motion: to defer that grant requests until such time as there was an uneven number of councillors present.
