Rachel Dunn, a student from Stratford Central Secondary

Thursday night at the 2012 Student Show in Blyth. The

The Student Show 2012 will open
the new season of exhibitions at the
Blyth Festival Art Gallery. Dozens
of works by Huron and Perth
County high school art students will
fill the Bainton Gallery for this
show, which begins with the
opening reception at 6 p.m.,
Thursday, May 3 and runs until May
17.
This annual show is an exciting
venue for celebrating student
creativity and features the best
works of students in Grades 9 – 12.
The Avon Maitland District School
Board includes schools from
Wingham, Clinton, Goderich,
Exeter, Mitchell, St. Mary's,
Stratford and Listowel. The Huron-
Perth Catholic School Board is
represented by works from Clinton
and Stratford. Many different artistic
techniques will be featured
including mixed media, sculpture,
photography, drawing, painting,
printmaking and digital illustration.
The public can expect to see
exciting art, full of youthful energy
and off-the-wall ideas. The Student
Show 2012 is presented by the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery and sponsored
by Goderich Print Shop. It officially
opens in the Bainton Gallery (next
to the Blyth Festival Box Office) on
Thursday, May 3 at 6 p.m.
Three Awards of Excellence will
be presented to outstanding
students. The winners will receive a
cash prize of $100 and their art
works will be displayed at the Blyth
Festival for the duration of the 2012
theatre season. This year, the Huron
Arts and Heritage Network (HAHN)
individual artist award was won by
Greg Sherwood, the Student Show’s
curator. HAHN’s chair, Deb
Sholdice, will present the award to
Sherwood at the opening.
All teachers, students, parents and
members of the public are invited to
the reception to join in the festivities
and help us open this exhibition.
Refreshments will be served.
The show will be available for
viewing during the Blyth Festival
box office hours and continues until
May 17.
By Aislinn Bremner
Having been in the Seaforth and
District All Girls Marching Band for
going on eight years and having
been on seven trips with the band,
spending hours on a coach bus to get
to our destination is nothing new to
me. After 23 hours on a bus,
however, it was nice to finally arrive
to sunny Tybee Island, Georgia;
especially coming from the Great
White North.
When we arrived we had a free
night to relax and get settled, which
we took advantage of, as most of us
did not get much sleep the night
before on the bus.
The next day, Sunday, we had an
opportunity to go a mall in Savannah
and as soon as we arrived Amanda
(my roommate for the week) and I
and a group of girls booked it over to
the Checkers we saw as we drove up
to the mall. Before I continue, if you
are someone who does not know
what Checkers is, you are missing
out. It is a delicious place to eat.
Personally, I enjoy their loaded
French fries with ranch dressing,
cheese and bacon heaped onto a
serving of fries.
We did not spend the entire
shopping trip at Checkers though.
We did make it to a few stores inside
the mall to browse and make some
purchases. Returning to the hotel
after our trip meant exploring the
beach area around our hotel. We
went out to the pier where part of the
film The Last Song was filmed.
On Monday morning the band had
a practice, which went fairly well. A
short while after the practice the bus
took us all back in to Savannah to
explore famous River Street. We all
got so excited about the downtown
that a lot of us didn’t realize we had
missed much of historic Savannah
by staying on River Street.
Regardless, we all had a good time
and those of us who forgot to apply
sunscreen might have got a bit too
much sun. However overcast it was,
the sun still managed to get to us.
Dinner at Spanky’s was quite
entertaining and a lot of fun. With
the whole band in one small area of
the restaurant, it would be difficult
for all of us to get a little bit silly
together. Following dinner we had a
“Ghosts and Gravestones” tour of
Savannah in a trolley. Our tour guide
had quite a few stories to tell, so it
was no surprise I had trouble
sleeping that night, not to mention
every other night we spent in
Savannah. I was grateful we weren’t
staying in Savannah for the rest of
the trip or I really would not have
slept the rest of our time in Georgia
thanks to those stories.
On Tuesday we had another
practice, this time on the beach. We
played for some people just out on a
walk, as well as a few seagulls. For
the rest of the day we had nothing
planned so Amanda and I spent
some time on the beach with Ava
and Conner, while their parents went
to do some shopping. It was a
gorgeous day to enjoy the ocean.
We got an early start to the day on
Wednesday for an ecology tour
along the beach. Soon after we got
there, we saw a whole bunch of
dolphins swimming around close to
shore. We learned quite a bit of
interesting information about the
different creatures in the ocean. The
tide was low early in the day so we
saw dead jellyfish washed up onto
the shore and a few sand dollars.
There were hermit crabs and spider
crabs sneaking around under the
sand and along the rocks while we
were out there. The beach was
absolutely beautiful in the morning
with the sun reflecting off the water.
Two days before we left Georgia,
Amanda and I finally made it to the
free breakfast at the hotel restaurant.
We enjoyed a delicious breakfast
before the band’s morning practice.
