The Citizen, 2012-05-03, Page 29The 140th Homecomingcommittee met for the ninth time andplans are following into place. Co-chairman Bob Richmond called the meeting to order and updates on committees were heard. A reminder from the decorating committee is that the colours for the celebration are red and white, black and burlap! The event flyers will be sent out in May. They will have a list of hopefully all the events with times and contact information included. The parade committee is encouraging all organizations, community groups, churches, business and families to enter a float, vehicle, horse or whatever your western imagination can conjure up. The parade is at High Noon on Saturday with a western theme. We hope everyone will come home to Brussels, your country village and enjoy a hoedown holiday time! Thesite will be updated as all plans areconfirmed, so keep checking.The Soap Box Derby is a premier event for youth of the area. It is time to start making your plans on building your soap box derby car. There will be three categories each for the boys and girls. The age groups will be for 6-7, 8-9 and 10- 12. All participants must have and wear safety helmets and all cars will be safety checked before they can race. The cars must have safe steering and working brakes. The course will be the hill on Dunedin Drive and the event is planned for Saturday morning from 9 - 11 a.m. Chairman for the event is Alvin McLellan with his son A.J., Dave Diehl and others helping out. Members of the Brussels Cadet Corp 2967 have offered to help and students looking for community volunteer hours can contact Alvin to become involved. The group appreciates the support of many area businesses in supplying items and prizes. McDonald Lumber is helping out with supplying the lumber forthe starting gate and others haveprovided the funding for the prizes.Sponsors for the trophies include D&J Construction, Dauphin Country Store, Barry’s Auto, Huron Feeding, Montgomery Collision,Barmy Tech, Dave Hastings andDave and Dianne Diehl. All entrantswill receive participation ribbons. Other children’s activities are being considered for Saturday afternoon following the parade.Updates will be posted on thewebsite. ELVEY JOHN MARSHALL Elvey John Marshall of Seaforth and formerly of Fullarton, passed away at Seaforth Community Hospital on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. He was 60. Elvey was the beloved husband of Debra Anne (nee Zvonkin), the loving father of Nicholas (Kelly) Marshall of Brussels and Nathan (Amanda) Marshall of Seaforth and the cherished grandpa of Griffin, Hudson, Lia, Corbin, Cohen and Mckinlee. Elvey was the dear brother of Wes Marshall, Tom (Pat) Marshall, Rod (Wanda) Marshall and Sam (Mike) Kells. Elvey will be missed by “daughter” Kim, brother-in-law Mel MacKay, several nieces and nephews and Debra’s parents Carl and Jo Zvonkin. Elvey is also survived by Debra’s siblings, Gerry (Cheryl) Zvonkin, Vince (Frances) Zvonkin, Jeannie (Floyd) Gregory and Jason (Bonnie) Zvonkin. He was predeceased by a daughter Dana, his parents Glenn and Dorothy Marshall, sister Mary MacKay, nephew Glenn MacKay and nieces Carly Zvonkin and Heidi Marshall. Visitation was held at McGlynn Family Funeral Home, Seaforth on April 26 and 27. The funeral service was held on Saturday, April 28. Pastor Stephen Hildebrand officiated. Interment has taken place at Bethel Munro Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
