Explorer, battle roses to mark entrance to garden Continued from page 15 wouldn’t be an ideal place for an ordinary garden due to the fact that it is well-shaded, but Vicky, who is the president of the Goderich Horticultural Society, feels that the minimal plants will work well with the surveying monuments. She said that special breeds ofroses known as explorer roses, which are named after famous Canadian explorers, will accent the garden and that the Rose of 1812, also known as battle roses, will mark the entry to the garden on the North Street property. Aside from that, she said that traditional Huron County plants will be placed throughout the garden. The project is currently in the planning stage with stakes already placed to mark where the fence around the garden will be. It will be on the Culbert’s property, but it is open to the public. “We’re going to run it during business hours,” Vicky said. The duo believes that this is an excellent way to preserve history and follow their passions simultaneously as well as a perfect opportunity to show what the monuments look like in hopes of finding more of them. “We don’t know if this will interest anyone beyond engineers and surveyors,” he said. “But it’s something we want to do and we don’t know of any other gardens in existence,” she said. “We want to preserve the history of surveying for those interested.” Currently the couple is actively seeking road survey markers which, due to plowing and road construction, are often lost. Doug said that local road crews have said they would keep an eye out so he could work with them, but they are few and far between due to the amount of debris and damage that can occur at a roadside. The monuments that will populate the garden are already beginning to accumulate at the office and there are three more in Toronto for Doug to pick up. Those three, however, may be the most daunting of thecollection because they have been described as very large. The entire collection will be on loan from the association to the Culberts to be used and stored in their garden.
