Cirque du Soleil performer,
Meaghan Wegg was at the Blyth
Festival Theatre last month for
Dance Techniques' showcase
helping two talented groups prepare
for four upcoming dance
competitions around Ontario, the
second of which is being held in
Niagara Falls this weekend.
The talented young dancers, who
have been practising their routines
since September, are now finally
getting the chance to perform for an
audience and compete against other
groups for the chance to compete
nationally.
Wegg who has travelled all over
the globe with Cirque, took time out
of her busy schedule to adjudicate
the performers at the showcase and
give them pointers for their four
upcoming competitions in late April
and early May.
Wegg, who began her dance
career in the same Dance
Techniques studio as these young
dancers, started the dance showcase
off by performing an inspirational
Cirque-style routine for the
audience.
Hailing from nearby Teeswater,
Wegg feels the power of sport and
achieving one’s goals is always
possible.
“I was one of these kids. I started
on the same competitive dance team.
I had the same teachers they do,”
said Wegg.
Although Wegg’s role at the
showcase was to adjudicate for the
performers, her story and success
holds more inspiration to the
dancers who are starting out in her
shoes than she might think.
The upcoming competitions are a
great opportunity for dancers -
especially those from a small town -
to get noticed. Performing in these
competitions is how Wegg started
out and ended up performing
professionally with Cirque du
Soleil. She is now dedicated to
guiding and helping others follow in
her footsteps and achieve their
dance dreams.
