HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2012-04-26, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 2012.Huron East Council was told that
renovations to the roof and windows
of the historic town hall building in
Seaforth will cost nearly half a
million dollars.
Thor Dingman presented his cost
estimates to councillors at their April
17 meeting saying that if slate was to
be used on the roof and wood for the
window frames, which would be his
recommendation, estimated costs
would be $445,000. A most cost-
effective formula, Dingman said,
with copper roofing and vinyl
windows would bring the estimate
down over $100,000 to $340,000.Councillors have considered thetown hall an “eyesore” for years nowand have made its repair a priority
this year after conducting extensive
research last year.
Dingman said that while the cost
may seem high, the building will be
turning 110 years old next year and
the municipality, and the Town of
Seaforth before it, have received
“great value” out of a roof lasting
that long.
Dingman informed council that
the building was designated as a
heritage structure in 1977, so certain
practices must be followed in
renovating the building.
Dingman proposed slate for theroof, saying it has been proven tolast for between 75 and 100 years, whereas other methods have yet to
prove they have the capacity to last
that long.
“Slate is well recognized for long-
term buildings,” Dingman told
council.
Dingman insisted that for “a good
heritage approach” the combination
of a slate roof and wood window
frames would be his
recommendation.
After presenting the cost-effective
alternative, Dingman said that while
there are savings to be had with a
different roofing material, the
savings just aren’t there in movingfrom wood window frames to vinylones. Dingman said vinyl window
frames will provide approximately
$15,000 in savings, but for the
reduction in quality and the overall
size of the project, the savings just
didn’t make sense to him.No decision was made at themeeting as to which option councilpreferred. However, the decision
was made during budget
deliberations that $500,000 would
be set aside for the project by way of
an internal debenture.
