Nichol defends Hawley’s work
Paul Nichol of the Huron Business
Development Corporation (HBDC)
asked to speak to Huron East
Council in favour of its economic
development department before the
budget passed on April 17.
Nichol said he had been following
the battle over economic
development in the municipality
through the local media and wanted
to speak on behalf of Economic
Development Officer Jan Hawley
and the good work she has done in
Huron East before a final decision
on the budget was made.
Nichol cited a comment made that
economic development is difficult to
quantify and disagreed, saying that
the work he has done at the HBDC
can be measured.
The HBDC, for example, has
helped nearly 2,350 businesses,
which accounts for one-third of all
Huron County businesses and one
quarter of the jobs in Huron County.
Through investment in the centre,
Nichol said, each job in Huron
County has cost taxpayers $2,800.
Speaking of Hawley’s work
specifically, Nichol said that there
has been an attitude change in
Brussels and an active economy,
despite the look of the village’s main
street.
Nichol said he believed the
change in attitude and stable
economy were a direct result of the
business retention and expansion
study that was done in Brussels.
Nichol listed the accomplishments
of Huron East on the economic
front, such as Walton’s annual
Motocross, the Huron East Health
Centre in Seaforth and various other
viable businesses and attractions.
If councillors were to take a closer
look at the flourishing businesses in
Huron East, Nichol said, they would
find that almost all of them have
been helped along by Hawley and
her team.
Nichol also said that Huron East
carries with it Canada’s lowest
unemployment rate of 4.8 per cent.
Hawley’s economic development
budget was passed as part of the
municipality’s 2012 budget, as
Hawley presented it.
Locals bounce back
from shoulder injuries

week and Ken is already tired of
cooking. Get well soon!
Shoulders and shoulder areas are
the theme this week, because Abby
McGavin has also undergone
surgery. She had broken her
collarbone very badly last year and
they have now operated and taken
out the plates and pins that have
held it together. She didn’t have a
good week but is feeling much
better and has returned to school
again. Keep on feeling better Abby.
Mitchell Godkin suffered a
broken collarbone while away at a
motocross race on the weekend. The
family had travelled to Mount
Morris, Pennsylvania to race and
hopefully qualify for the Loretta
Lynn Amateur National
Championships held in Tennessee in
August. Unfortunately, Mitchell
injured himself in practice and was
unable to race. We wish him a
speedy recovery and hopefully he
will be able to race yet this
year.
Well, the Lorne Glanville house is
underway again. The “i”s have been
dotted and the “t”s crossed and
inspections passed after two weeks
and a flurry of work resumed. The
week has seen the backfill in place,
basement partitions in place, the
deck put on. The call for Glanville
help went out and by the end of the
weekend, the four walls were in
place. Cement trucks arrived on
Monday and the side porch was
poured. Lots of help makes things
move right along.
Paul and Teresa Glanville, Erica
and Meagan have been in Ontario
for a few days from P.E.I. They
travelled here for Paul’s business
and were able to spend a few days
near the farm. They witnessed the
amazing week’s progress of the
house before returning.
