The Majestic Women’s Institute
met on March 14 at the Brussels
Library at 1:30 p.m. Guests from the
Walton Women’s Institute also
attended.
After business was dealt with,
Wanda Walker introduced guest
speaker Cheryl Phillips and her
student placement Courtney Bennet
from One Care, formerly Town and
Country Support Services. They
spoke to the group about nutritional
risk and how it is just as important to
eat regularly as it is what you eat.
Members were given a
questionnaire to fill out about
regular eating habits. They will take
them back and analyze the answers
then return them at a future meeting
letting everyone know if they are at
risk of poor nutrition due to bad
eating habits. The visual displays of
portion sizes surprised most people
with how much they could eat from
each food group when following the
Canada Food Guide.
Fifty per cent of your plate should
contain vegetables, 25 per cent
starch and 25 per cent protein.
Phillips also spoke on reading
labels, looking at daily values which
helps you to balance your daily
intake and make wise choices.
It was a lot of information to take
in. The group also thanked them for
the healthy snacks.
