Fancy some fish?

Last of the snowbirds return
What a wind a week ago on
Monday April 16. Many area folks
out Walton way went without hydro
for awhile due to trees coming down
on power lines.
The Braecker family was
particularly hard hit with a tree close
to their home taking out the power
lines and pole in the yard. The tree
was dragged away and the
repairmen there within the hour.
Upon inspection of the remaining
trees in close proximity to the
already fallen tree, it was decided
that they were in poor shape and
should also come down. Karen was
outside at the back of the house the
time the tree came down and she
heard the thunderous snap of the
tree. She was shocked to see the
destruction it caused upon falling.
The Braeckers had taken down 20
mature pines a month ago because
of “old age” and now to having lost
another six trees, their place looks
very naked. Thankfully no-one was
hurt, the buildings were
not damaged and trees can be
replanted.
As I am writing this on Monday
the wind is howling yet again. There
was already a tented car shelter
blown over first thing in the morning
and it will not be surprising if more
trees/limbs litter the road by the end
of the day.
Mondays prove windy
I believe the last snowbird has
returned from Florida. Margery
Huether arrived last week and is
making her rounds catching up with
her many Walton, Brussels and
Seaforth friends. Welcome back
Margery!
Don Dalton just keeps on
celebrating his birthday. When the
children gathered at Don and Pat’s
home for Easter, they witnessed the
arrival of yet another gift for Don.
Good friend Lorne Glanville arrived
at their place on a John Deere “M”
tractor. Don had said many times
over the years that his Dad had had
that tractor and someday, he would
like to have one too. Loving wife Pat
sent Lorne on the search and was
able to acquire the once-in-a-
lifetime gift. Don was completely
surprised and we look forward to
Don parading his new “ride” around
the area!
A very talented young lady has
captured top honours in her
competitive sport. Teagan McGavin
competed in Vaughan from
Thursday until Sunday last week in
Acro Dance at the Star Beat
Competition. She is the daughter of
Jeff and Shannon McGavin and is 11
years old. She danced once every
day and twice on Saturday before
being crowned as first place in the
competitive Level 1 Solo in the
Platinum Level achieving a score of
over 94 per cent. She competed
against dancers from all over
Ontario. Teagan dances out of the
Danceology Studio in Lucknow.
Achieving second place in the same
category as Teagan was Jeran
Johnston, the daughter of Kelly
Anderson and Kevin Johnston of
Belgrave. Congratulations to both
these talented young girls.
A fishing trip to Owen Sound was
enjoyed by a few local men last
week. Mike and Kelly Boven and
Dan Gilbert and a few others went
on a charter to try their luck at
catching salmon. They managed to
catch four they could keep and three
they had to throw back because of
size. They encountered five-foot
swells, but enjoyed their day.
Visiting our area last week was
Doris Johnson McKinley from Nova
Scotia. I’m sure she was visiting her
sister Leona Armstrong, but she also
made time to see Graeme Craig.
Doris has agreed to lead the choir for
Duff’s anniversary in June. She has
chosen some special music and
Graeme is recruiting former choir
members to be sure and join us thatday.Another former area lady visitingis Eileen Glanville Duncan fromWoodstock. She is catching up with
sisters Marlene Hill and Marjorie
Horst. She has caught up with many
of her brothers at the job site of
Lorne and Bonnie Glanville’s new
home. Finishing his year at the Olds
Agricultural College in Alberta is
Brandon McGavin. He and two
friends left Olds after writing their
final exam on Thursday and were in
Manitoba Thursday night. They
were on the road early and drove
straight through until arriving at 7
a.m. Saturday morning. A trio of
tired boys, but glad to be home for
the summer. Welcome back
Brandon!
The Walton Women’s Institute
held its annual meeting at the Walton
Inn last Wednesday. They enjoyed
dinner and then their annual meeting
and the installation of officers. They
are carrying on for another year,
even though they only have seven
members. Jean Gloor of Mitchell
was the guest speaker and installing
officer. President is Ruth Axtmann;
secretary-treasurer, Helen Craig,
Tweedsmuir History. Marion
Godkin; ROSE Committee, Marjory
Humphries; PRO, Brenda Perrie and
members-at-large, Mary Humphries
and Margaret McInroy. A very
interesting and entertaining
fundraiser the Institute has taken on
is the sale of the tickets for “The 30s
Show”. It is a musical featuring the
music of the 30s with songs like“You’re The Top”, “Getting to KnowYou”, “ Cheek to Cheek” and manymore. Talented singers Barry Mahonand Janice McIntrye along with the
Walsh sisters dancing and four
members of the Harmony Kings will
entertain with songs, dance, stories
and jokes from the dirty 30s. The
show is Mother’s Day weekend at
the Blyth Festival on the Saturday
evening, May 12. Tickets booked
through the Institute will benefit the
ladies and their programs. Feel free
to contact Margaret McInroy 519-

The McKillop birthday girls met
at the Walton Inn on Monday
morning to celebrate Carol

along with lady friends Karen
Braecker, Judy Beuerman, Brenda
Bernard, Marlene Glanville, Yolanda
Gubelman and Jeanette Robinson.
Happy birthday Carol!

The NHL playoffs are on and for
some hardcore fans, going to see
your team, the Ottawa Senators play,
is a must. Scott McDonald and Kevin
Murray are these fans and they were
off to Ottawa. They went to game
three of the Ottawa Senators and
New York Rangers series on
Monday, April 16th to see the game.
They had prime seats, three rows up
behind the Senators bench. We
watched carefully, but did not see the
boys. It was a really good game but
unfortunately, the Senators lost 1-0.
The travelling couple of Tanner
and Loni Leslie have been visiting
the island of Koh Phi Phi. They
rented a long tail boat and went over
to Koh Phi Phi Ley Island, where the
movie The Beach with Leonardo
DeCaprio was filmed. The island and
beach were crawling with tourists,
but was really neat they report. They
went swimming in the crystal clear
lagoon and went snorkelling and saw
some beautiful fish. The return trip
on the boat that night, had them
witness the most beautiful sunset!
They went onto Monkey Beach
where the tourists were feeding
bananas to about 15 monkeys. They
were really cute! The couple went to
see Doctor Fish. They paid $5 and
put their feet into a tank of fish. The
fish ate the dead skin off their feet
and legs. They report it was a crazy
sensation- kind of tickling at first and
then felt okay after you relaxed. They
said their skin felt very soft the next
day. They are going to Phuket and
the beach town of Kata next and we
hope to hear from them again.
Sounds like a trip of a lifetime for the
couple.
The residents of Jamestown have
lost a long-time resident with
Elizabeth McKercher moving to
Listowel. She has an apartment on
Inkerman Street and seems to be
enjoying her new surroundings. She
is lucky to have her sister in the same
building, so they can visit all the
time. Elizabeth will be seen around
Brussels from time to time, as long
as the weather is good.
Congratulations to Sherri and Jeff
Hamilton on the birth of a son, Cole.
He was welcomed home by big sister
Brooke. Excited grandparents are
Brian and Dianne Huether.
Get-well wishes or speedy
recovery hopes go to Sandy Huether.
She has undergone shoulder surgery
to fix a torn rotator cuff and will be
laid up for awhile. It has only been a

The sanctuary of Duff’s United
had a smaller crowd than usual on
the third Sunday of Easter or Earth
Day. They were greeted by Chad,
Crystal, Kaleigh and Bridget
McCallum. Phyllis Mitchell
performed with Glenda Morrison.
Rev. Peter welcomed everyone and
proceeded with the call to worship.
The scripture readings were
presented by Murray Dennis. The
sermon was entitled “Glimpses of the
Resurrection” and combined the
stories of how Jesus appeared to his
disciples and how they thought they
were seeing a ghost to how his visit
moves them to “see, believe and act”.
The collection was taken by Chad
and Kaleigh McCallum and Jeff
McGavin.
Announcements include May 1 is
an anniversary meeting and help is
needed. Please attend at 7:30 p.m.
and be part of this event. May 2 is the

$360 was raised through the loose
change collection for the building of
the school in Sierra Leone. Cleanup
day at Camp Menesetung is May 5,
9 a.m. - 2 p.m. and volunteers are
appreciated. Credit for student hours
can be earned. Breakfast was held
following church with Marie
McGavin, Shelley and Tyson
McGavin, Betty McCallum and
Karen Hoegy providing the delicious
fare of ham, eggs, hash brown
casserole, pancakes, muffins and
fruit
A short meeting concerning the
upcoming anniversary in June was
held following the breakfast. The
prices for a tent were discussed and
with the uplifting response already
received, a tent will be required. The
UCW will discuss their needs at their
meeting in May. Graeme requested
former choir members contact him
about singing in the choir. Practice
will be late Saturday afternoon and
prior to service Sunday morning.
Phyllis has planned an old-time
dance for the Saturday evening at the
Walton Hall. She has arranged the
music and old-time prices of 35 cents
for hotdogs will be charged. Families
are asked to consider supplying
flowers in memory of loved ones for
the service. There are committees
still needing some help and
volunteers.
