The Huron Cultural Awards were held on April 16 in Bayfield and several local groups and individuals were nominated for awards. The Blyth Festival Singers were nominated for best cultural event/organization and while the award was given to the Celtic Folk Society/Celtic Roots Festival of Goderich president of the singers, Gary Coursey, said that being nominated was an award within itself. “It was very good to be nominated,’ he said. “It’s nice that people notice that we are trying to stretch ourselves to do different styles of music and try different genres.” Coursey said the group had no idea they had been nominated until that evening and were very happy tofind out they were. He said theywere glad to share the nominationwith the groups they did and he was proud of the fact they made it that far. Brussels’ Jim Lee was also nominated for his efforts in Brussels for the community contributor which recognizes a volunteer, sponsor or donor that has made an impact on the county’s cultural community. “I was very honoured to be nominated,” he said. “It came as a surprise.” Lee feels that the event is a benefit to the arts and culture community in Huron County because it shows the catalogue of all the different cultures the area has. “It’s very representational as to what Huron County has to offer in terms of arts and culture,” he said. “We have everything from acting tofine art and from old time fiddling toopera.”Lee said that there is this misconception in Huron County that people have to go somewhere else to have their works admired. “We have such a good cross section of talented people here,” he said. “It’s a real joy to be there and see them be recognized.” He also felt that the down-to-earth attitude that many of the artists had will help to show how arts and culture in Huron County are accessible to all and lack any elitism that might be understood. Blyth’s Duncan McGregor was nominated on his own for his activity in the community but the play he directed last summer Narcisse was also nominated in the other four categories. While McGregor was happy to have Narcisse win the HeritageAward, he, like Lee, feels that theawards are a great addition to thecultural fabric of Huron County. He also felt that “awards” weren’t really the best term to describe them. “This isn’t really an awards show, it’s more recognition for something that you did in the eyes of your contemporaries,” he said. “That’s good to have and it’s good to spread that recognition around since it lets everyone know their efforts were worth it.” His win with Narcisse was great because he was able to share it with so many people he said. “To win as a group was great,” he said. “It’s great to be nominated, but to share the recognition with people is great.” The awards are usually presented by members of the cultural society of Huron County and the show itself offers a chance to show what’scoming next according toMcGregor.“The event lets people know what’s coming up for this season,” he said. “Last year, for Narcisse, we were involved. The Blyth Festival presents its upcoming season. This year there was a music festival there that will be in Bayfield that looks like it will be interesting.” The night is a “good evening all around” according to McGregor and shows what the community is capable of.
