SportsStorm is brewing as all Lightning go to provincials
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
celebrated its 15th year as an
organization by sending all five
Saugeen Maitland teams to the
Greater Toronto Area (GTA) on
Friday, April 13 to Sunday, April 15
to compete in the Provincial
Women’s Hockey Championship.
Each Saugeen team was in a pool
of four teams with six pools in each
division. Each team played three
games with the top two advancing in
each pool to the elimination round.
All five Saugeen teams had an
identical record in round robin with
a win, a tie and a loss. The PeeWee
AA team advanced to play London
and was defeated 2-0 to end their
season. It was the first year for
Saugeen at the PeeWee AA level and
they had a great finish to the season
which included a tournament win in
Barrie.
The Bantam A team had to win the
last game against Etobicoke to finish
first. A tie would leave three teams
tied and Saugeen would lose in a tie
breaker to move on. Saugeen was
down by a score of 2-1 late in the
game and with the goaltender out,
Etobicoke scored to end the season.
This was the second year for a
Bantam A team, which struggled all
year with injuries, and ended playing
Provincials with two defencemen
out. Saugeen won bronze in an
Oakville tournament.
The Bantam AA team moved on to
play the top-ranked Whitby team
and lost a close game 3-1. Saugeen
had a great year winning their Lower
Lakes Female Hockey League
(LLFHL) division placing first in the
season and then winning all three
playoff series to advance to finals
where they ended up in fourth place.
The Bantam AA team won a
prestigious Ottawa tournament
followed by Silver medals in Detroit
and Rochester. With a record of 51-
11-8 Saugeen was rated in the top
two in Canada all year.
The Midget A team advanced on
to play Cambridge and had a great
game winning by a score of 3-0 to
move to the quarter finals. Saugeen
met Toronto Leaside and dropped a
3-0 decision to end a great run. This
was the second year for the Midget
A team. The team was coached by
Brenda Yourth who was one of the
original founders and has coached
PeeWee, Bantam and Midget for
Saugeen. Saugeen won silver in
Windsor winning five games before
losing 1-0 against Neapan.
The Midget AA moved on to play
a tough Waterloo team and lost a 2-0
decision. Saugeen had a great year
finishing first in the regular season
and then winning all three playoff
series to win the LLFHL division.
Saugeen won the bronze medal in
LLFHL division finals. With a
record of 52-14-10 Saugeen was
rated in the top 10 in Canada all year
and also has been rated in the top 10
for the last seven years. Joe Chaffe
has been the coach for all seven of
those years and Saugeen welcomes
back one of the top coaches in
Canada back for his eighth year.
Saugeen won gold medals in
Mississauga, Whitby and Windsor
with bronze medals in Silver Stick
and Guelph along with a 13-game
winning streak. Congratulations
on a great year for the Midget AA
team.
We welcome all players to come
try out in one of the top-ranked
women’s hockey organizations in
Canada. Saugeen will be hosting
tryouts from April 21 to April 30 for
the 16th season – 2012-2013.
Saugeen Maitland will be running
six teams this year, PeeWee A and
AA, Bantam A and AA and Midget
A and AA. Please bring permission
to skate forms and check our website
for tryout schedules.

Bibok. The class was asked to pick
someone that was close to them for
the laying of the hands. Bryce and
Brett asked mom and dad, Karen and

grandpa Fred Meier and Wanita
asked her husband and daughter,

After confirmation the candidates
were given a gift as they became
members of the United Church of
Canada. The next hymn was “O
Jesus I Have Promised” followed by
the reading of the scripture from
John 21: 15-19. The choir favoured
the congregation with the anthem,
“Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.”
Rev. Clark’s message was “Do You
Love Me?” In the scriptures Jesus
asks Peter three times if he loved
Him. In ancient times this was the
practice so they were sure that they
were heard. Being a member of the
church is not an easy task. It creates
demands. We are to look after Jesus’
lambs and sheep. This is looking
after those who are vulnerable like
the elderly, someone who is
handicapped, the poor and the very
poor in the world. Shame will make
us vulnerable.
Things we have done and things
we wish we had done differently.
When we are vulnerable we feel
uncomfortable. People try to make
the uncertain become certain.
We don’t know what tomorrow
will bring. Often when things go
wrong we want to blame someone
else. If we can forgive ourselves
for being vulnerable we can
forgive others.
If we repeat the words “I Am
Enough” we can help to change the
world.
Jesus tells us we are enough and
will help others and lift them up
when they are down. When we
accept vulnerability we can meet the
challenges that come before us. The
next hymn, “Take My Life and Let It
Be” was sung. The offering was
received followed by the offering
hymn, “What Can I Do” and the
offertory prayer, the prayers for the
world, silent prayers and the singing
of The Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn
was “For All The Saints” followed
by the commissioning and
benediction.
Everyone was invited to have
coffee and treats and to meet the
newest members of the church.
