There was no crowing in the
village this week. Our rooster has
relocated to Grey township, after
much effort and co-ordination by the
folks of Sports Drive. Reports are
that he is now even happier, down on
the farm. Of course it was the
inclusion of a female or two into the
living arrangements that sealed the
deal. Now all is well with the world.
Perhaps we could send Brussels
folks experienced in the rooster
taming business to a few political
offices. Using the same strategies,
they could use their sense of reason,
fairness and fair play and convince a
few key people that what they are
playing with is not theirs and they
should stop acting like roosters.
Perhaps a barnyard lesson in money
in and money out, could help. Allreports that I’ve seen lately seem toshow lack of common sense andmoney management. So back to thebarnyard for their lesson.
The Maitland Conservation
Foundation held its 24th annual
dinner and auction at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre
on Friday night, with a full house
ready to eat and bid.
It’s a convenient way for us to
support their work of education and
conservation regarding the Maitland
River. An evening with them is
educational, fun and filling. Cardiff
Catering, Jeff and Cathy and crew
did a fine job of the food, always a
treat. Donated items to bring home
are varied and unique, as you try
your luck at silent and live auctions,
with volunteer auctioneer Dave
Johnston teasingly pulling money for
the cause. This year, area artists
showed their talents by painting
canoe paddles in their own style and
they were then ready for bids – good
stuff. To the Foundation, with the
great volunteers – well done and
keep up the good work on our behalf.
Doug, Jane, Laura, Christopher
and John Richards of Ailsa Craigwere in Brussels on Sunday.Christopher’s Confirmation into theUnited Church of Canada wascelebrated at worship and at lunch.
Times of joy are best marked with
good food and friends. So 14 of us
ate, drank and were merry, sharing
stories and laughter after Church to
mark Christopher’s decision. One of
the guests was 50-year-old Warren
Wray, yes he really is 50. Warren
was still celebrating from his
birthday party at the Kin Station the
night before. Warren started his
Brussels days boarding with Sheila
Richards, so his attendance added
another set of stories for us
to share. Aren’t friendships
wonderful?
Kid’s Corner date is set. The troop
has scheduled Aug. 6-10 as Brussels
time, so mark the calendar now so
you can get the grandkids here for
this fun time. The area churches
assist with this venture with cash,
volunteers and food. If you have any
of these and wish to share, tell the
ministers or Yvonne Dettwieler at519-887-6723. Everyone will have a good time.Bye now, Betty G.W.PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 2012.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Brussels Legion Branch 218 had a
quiet week, but a very busy
weekend.
The Cadets met on Tuesday
evening and the pipe band practised
on Thursday night.
The Friday night supper of ham
and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed
by a good crowd of nearly 40. This
week will be roast beef.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 11 tables of players. Winners
were: high, Ed Stewart and Glen
Sellers, 75; second, Bill and Faye
Albert and Jim Devereaux and
Russell Smith, 70 points; third, Bev
and Mary McIntosh, 68; lone hands,
Janet Davies and Hazel McGonigle;
low, Elunid McNair and Jean
Bewley, 41. Euchre is every two
weeks.
The Brussels Public School Grade
8 graduating class held a fundraising
fish fry at the Branch on Saturday.
The class of 21 had varying
responsibilities to make a successful
event for the class. They also had
parent volunteers lending a helping
hand. They had a great turnout with
about 275 folks enjoying the fish
dinner.
The fish fry crew for the Branch
included Lisa Glanville, Greg
Wilson, Barrie Currie, Norm
Dobson, Sharon Robbins, Deb Caan
and Murray Lowe. They did a great
job as usual.
The Sunday night dance crowd
enjoyed the music of the Country
Versatiles. There were almost 90 in
attendance. Helping out the Branch
were Deb Caan, Jo-Ann McDonald,
Mabel Glanville, Judy Lee, Eric
Ross and Amy.
