It was another wonderful evening
of musical entertainment at
Londesborough United Church on
Sunday, April 15 as the Board of
Stewards held the 32nd annual
Songfest. First-time emcee Mark
Mitchell did an admirable job of
introducing the various acts and
putting them at ease while filling in
the setup times with trivia, etc.
Again this year Barb Bosman,
Londesborough United’s choir
director and organist, found an
interesting variety of talent for the
audience’s enjoyment. Gary Black
of Clinton is to be commended for
tweaking the sound system.
The very talented Westfield Snell
Family, father Dan, mother and
children Heather, Rachael, Joel and
Jonathan, opened the program. Their
songs were accompanied with
guitar, flute, violin and keyboard.
Their first number was a medley that
included “Do Lord” and “The
Church in the Wildwood”. The
family also offered a beautiful new
and different rendition of “Amazing
Grace – My Chains Are Gone”. They
began their second set with a number
the family composed themselves,
“Born of a Virgin”.
Brittany Lyon, granddaughter of
Bert and Joanne Lyon and daughter
of Wayne and Jane Lyon, made a
return visit to Londesborough
United. She is finishing her fourth
year at Queen’s University studying
opera. She has a powerful voice
which filled the sanctuary with
lovely Italian, French, Latin and
English arias. In the second half of
the program Brittany and her
roommate, Gillian Grant, also an
opera student, sang as a duet a Latin
requiem. These numbers were
accompanied by Barb Bosman.
Events such as this annual
songfest help young musicians gain
self confidence and stage presence in
front of an understanding and
There were 10 tables of euchre
players at Londesborough
Community Hall on Friday, April 13,
hosted by the Londesborough Happy
Gang Seniors.
Winners were: first, Kay
Hesselwood and Bernice Moore, 79;
second, Kathy and Susan, 76; third,
John and Edna, 70; lone hands,
Doreen and Sally, six. The seniors
group will hold their next card party
on May 11.
The village has a new wee
resident, Scott Brandon Hubbard,
born March 17 in the Stratford
hospital. Congratulations are
extended to parents Nathan and
Jennifer, who say Scott sleeps as
much as can be expected of a
newborn.
Take mom out for supper on
Mother’s Day weekend.
Londesborough United will hold
their ham and salad supper at the
community hall on Saturday, May
12 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Since Radford’s took on the post
office I’ve come to realize that stamp
collecting would be a most
interesting hobby. If you have a
young person in your family looking
for something different, beginning a
stamp collection might be a
suggestion. However, it might be
prohibitive cost-wise. I didn’t
recognize before just how well
stamps reflect our lifestyles and
history. This month the post office
introduced a stamp to commemorate
the 100th anniversary of the sinking
of the Titanic. And you are already
using the stamp to reflect the 60th
anniversary of Queen’s Elizabeth’s
coronation.
NASCAR noises and memorabilia
transformed the halls of Hullett
Central Public School on Friday,
April 13 as the members of the
Student Advisory Committee (SAC)
held their annual community funnight and silent auction. The theme, NASCAR, wasevident throughout. The programs,
drawn and coloured by the pupils
were titled, Hullett 500; the walls of
the gym were covered with the
names and numbers of well-known
NASCAR drivers and tables had
checkerboard cloths. Outside, one
could try one’s hand at changing
tires in a pit box; try plasma car
racing or look over a racing car.Scott Steckley, 2011 NASCARCanadian Tire Series champion, wason hand to sign autographs. All that
was missing, in my mind, was the
true race engine noise.
There was plenty of noise as folks
visited, picked out bake sale items,
enjoyed a light supper, made bids on
the 235 silent auction items or took
part in the live auction. The children
were entertained with balloon
creations, their own penny sale, facepainting and a games room.Early results of the evening were$13,000 before expenses.
The Hullett and SAC extend a
huge thank you to everyone who
in any way to the success of the
event.
The April attribute receiving
attention at Hullett is honesty
defined as being trustworthy, sincere
and truthful.

food, games of chance, silent and live auctions, children’s games and NASCAR-inspired
events. (Denny Scott photo)

Michelle Heely, the secretary at
Hullett Central Public School, said a
lot of students had been absent due
to illness and the school may be
rescheduling extra-curricular
activities such as the school’s spring
concert due to the absences.
She said they had over 10 per cent
of the school’s population out with
illnesses for over a week.
Other local schools have reported
they have seen an increase in illness
but it’s expected during the flu
season.
