Through a grant from the Huron
Economic Development Partnership
consisting of Huron County, the
Huron Business Development
Corporation (HBDC) and the
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs
(OMAFRA), the Blyth Business
Improvement Area (BIA) received
$6,000 to start a business retention
and expansion plan.
The plan, as explained by Huron
Business Development Co-
ordinator Douglas Barill, is
basically a business plan for the
business community.
The program has seen some
success throughout the county
according to Barill.
“Bayfield did this in 2010 and it
has been very helpful in getting
grants and funding since then as the
government asks for this plan first,”
he said.
Brussels has also taken advantage
of the program and is coming to the
end of their business retention and
expansion plan.
Creating the plan is an
approximately five-month process
according to Barill. First the BIA
would need to identify store owners
to sit down with and discuss issues
and then start contacting them.
“We would do a one-on-one
interview with each entrepreneur
and identify the major impediments
to business that are specific to
Blyth,” Barill said.
The BIA submitted a request for
development assistance in a second
meeting in March and Barill was on
hand during the BIA’s April 5
meeting to inform them they had
been approved for the project.
The contract begins May 1 and
ends on Sept. 30 and, in that time,
the business retention and
Blyth to start newbusiness plan
For Lent
Children from the Blyth United Church’s Sunday School challenged the church’s choir to
collect more items for the food bank than them for Lent. The winners would receive cupcakes
cooked by the other group. The Sunday School children won, however, collecting 180 items
compared to the choir’s 160. (Photo submitted)
