I think we should look at policing because if we keep going at the same rate, we won’t be able to afford it.” Shewfelt said there are county models for policing for Huron to look to. “I don’t think looking just at fire cuts it,” Shewfelt said. “We have to look at it like eating the elephant, one little bite at a time.” Bluewater’s Bill Dowson said the only fair way to evaluate fire costs is to determine how much fire coverage costs per $1,000 of assessment throughout the county. “I think ours is reasonable,” Dowson said of Bluewater, “but we need those numbers.” North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent, however, defended his fire service, saying that he and his staff have spent hundreds of hours working on a fully compliant fire service to protect the people of North Huron and that he stands by it. Vincent said in North Huron staff went to great lengths to make their fire service compliant, but that he wouldn’t comment on other fire services throughout the county because he doesn’t know enough about them. Warden Bernie MacLellan cut Vincent off, however, saying that he was getting off-topic and that the discussion should surround investigating a possible county-wide fire service, not the compliance of fire services throughout the county. Councillor Paul Klopp said he was in favour of hearing more information, but had a feeling that would be about as far as it would go. “I have a feeling this is going to cost too much, but I’m open- minded,” Klopp said. Shewfelt, however, warned councillors against scaring away the volunteers who protect Huron County residents by getting too greedy. “We receive great protection and we get it from volunteers,’ Shewfelt said. “I think if this goes forward, you better involve them and we should be thankful for all we get.” At its April 3 meeting, Morris- Turnberry Council voted to ask for more information about the site selection process for Canada’s Deep Geological Repository for Used Nuclear Fuel. Mayor Paul Gowing noted selection of a site is a long process. “Down the road, even if we decide we aren’t interested, maybe our neighbours might be involved. I’m whole-heatedly in favour of learning more. Nothing is going to happen without great consultation.” *** Council agreed to a $150 tee- sponsorship for the Huron County Warden’s Charity Golf Tournament to be held at the Seaforth Golf Course, July 13. Proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity. *** Karen Stewart from the Huron Arts and Heritage Network visited council to discuss that network’s project including the Doors Open Ontario event on Oct. 13-14. She requested a donation of $500. Council made no decision at the meeting. Shewfelt wants county-wide policing M-T sponsors tee
