About to sit down to the meal was Donna Bieman. (Vicky Bremner photo) On the weekend of March 30 - April 1 the Junior Farmers’ Association of Ontario held its Annual March Conference in Peterborough. During the weekend, the Annual General Meeting was held in which Huron County Junior Farmer Member, Rachel Haney, from RR 4, Seaforth, was elected as the Executive Director of Community and International Programs for the second consecutive year. Rachel will continue to oversee both incoming and outgoing exchanges, as well as many other tasks related to travel and hospitality. Last summer, Huron County Junior Farmer Member, Samantha Klaver went on an exchange to Wales. Once again, this year, Huron County had a Junior Farmer member apply for an exchange. Jacquelyn Denham of Seaforth, was awarded a three-month exchange to the United Kingdom. This exchange will take place from June until the end of August. Jacquelyn Denham will be the second Huron County member to go on an exchange since the club’s formation in 2000. The Huron County Junior farmers placed in the top three for both Overall Club of the Year and Agriculture Club of the Year out of all the clubs in the province. The club also received the Best New Member Recruitment Award, for having achieved the most new members to join their club for the year. The club had 10 new members join. Huron County Junior Farmers also won this award last year. As well Huron County Junior Farmer Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Apr. 7 were 1,710 cattle, 699 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold $1 to $2 lower. Choice steers and heifers sold $118 to $120 with sales to $122. Second cut sold $113 to $117. Cows sold on a strong active trade. On Thursday veal sold on a good strong trade with holstein veal selling steady to last week, while beef veal sold $2 to $5 higher. All classes of lambs sold $20 to $50 higher due to shortfall for the Easter weekend. Sheep and goats sold steady. On Saturday calves sold steady and yearlings sold $2 higher. On Monday at the vaccinated sale, steers and heifers sold on a steady trade. There were 63 fed steers on offer. Fred Riehl of Gadshill, consigned four steers averaging 1,341 lbs. selling for an average of $118.21 with two charolais steers averaging 1,315 lbs. selling for $121. Murray Wagg of Mitchell, consigned 10 steers averaging 1,474 lbs. selling for an average of $118.55 with six black steers averaging 1,483 lbs. selling for $118.75. Kevin Stewardson of Wyoming, consigned three steers averaging 1,447 lbs. selling for an average of $114.66 with one red steer weighing 1,600 lbs. selling to Horizon Meat Packers for $117.50. Simon BM Martin Jr. of Clifford, consigned four steers averaging 1,321 lbs. selling for an average of $114.04 with one limousin steer weighing 1,265 lbs. selling to Horizon Meat Packers for $117.50. Chad Fischer of Brussels, consigned 10 steers averaging 1,523 lbs. selling for an average of $117.10 with four black steers averaging 1,554 lbs. selling for $117.25. There were 119 fed heifers on offer. John S. Hunter of Grand Valley, consigned 20 heifers averaging 1,218 lbs. selling for an average of $115.62 with one black heifer weighing 1,115 lbs. selling for $122.50. Art and Geo Hinz of Monkton, consigned six heifers averaging 1,398 lbs. selling for an average of $115.90 with one black heifer weighing 1,490 lbs. selling to Horizon Meat Packers for $121.25. Noah Weppler of Ayton, consigned eight heifers averaging 1,356 lbs. selling for an average of $111.77 with one rwf heifer weighing 1,255 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for $119.25. Jeremy Sippel of Milverton, consigned five heifers averaging 1,498 lbs. selling for an average of $113.97 with three gold heifers averaging 1,452 lbs. selling for $117.25. There were 162 cows on offer. Export types sold $68.50 to $82 with sales to $84; beef cows, $74 to $85.50 with sales to $97; D1 and D2, $57 to $64; D3, $52 to $57; D4, $37 to $47. Doug Lightfoot of Crediton, consigned four cows averaging 1,426 lbs. selling for an average of $81.01 with one red cow weighing 1,435 lbs. selling for $85.50. There were six bulls sold $83 to $85 with sales to $94.50. JRM Meadows of Englehart, consigned one red bull weighing 1,565 lbs. selling for $86.50. John Calderwood of Kippen, consigned one holstein bull weighing 1,600 lbs. selling for $86.50. There were 87 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $140 to $170 with sales to $179.50; good holstein, $95 to $110 with sales to $119; medium holstein, $85 to $95; heavy holstein, $90 to $100 with sales to $105. Lamar Frey of Listowel, consigned 10 veal averaging 765 lbs. selling for an average of $154.04 with one limousin steer weighing 765 lbs. selling for $179.50. Terry Greidanus of Londesborough, consigned 15 veal averaging 703 lbs. selling for an average of $103.32 with one holstein steer weighing 770 lbs. selling for $178. John Martin of Lucknow, consigned seven veal averaging 736 lbs. selling for an average of $104.55 with one rwf heifer weighing 690 lbs. selling for $149. Lambs under 50 lbs. sold $340 to $472; 50 - 64 lbs., $320 to $416; 65 - 79 lbs., $260 to $337.50; 80 - 94 lbs., $222 to $285; 95 - 109 lbs., $191 to $240; 110 lbs. and over, $204 to $231. Sheep sold $60 to $90 with sales to $120. Goats: kids sold $80 to $150 to $165 per head; nannies, $50 to $110 per head; billies, $150 to $250 with sales to $300 per head. Top quality stocker steers under 400 lbs. sold $130 to $199; 400 - 499 lbs., $133 to $196; 500 - 599 lbs., $135 to $177; 600 - 699 lbs., $127 to $168; 700 - 799 lbs., $118 to $150; 800 - 899 lbs., $136.50 to $148.50; 900 - 999 lbs., $143.75 to $146.75; 1,000 lbs. and over, $114 to $136.
