Junior Farmers win big at conference

On the weekend of March 30 -
April 1 the Junior Farmers’
Association of Ontario held its
Annual March Conference in
Peterborough. During the weekend,
the Annual General Meeting was
held in which Huron County Junior
Farmer Member, Rachel Haney,
from RR 4, Seaforth, was elected as
the Executive Director of
Community and International
Programs for the second consecutive
year. Rachel will continue to oversee
both incoming and outgoing
exchanges, as well as many other
tasks related to travel and
hospitality.
Last summer, Huron County
Junior Farmer Member, Samantha
Klaver went on an exchange to
Wales. Once again, this year, Huron
County had a Junior Farmer member
apply for an exchange. Jacquelyn
Denham of Seaforth, was awarded a
three-month exchange to the United
Kingdom. This exchange will take
place from June until the end of
August. Jacquelyn Denham will be
the second Huron County member to
go on an exchange since the club’s
formation in 2000.
The Huron County Junior farmers
placed in the top three for both
Overall Club of the Year and
Agriculture Club of the Year out of
all the clubs in the province. The
club also received the Best New
Member Recruitment Award, for
having achieved the most new
members to join their club for the
year.
The club had 10 new members
join. Huron County Junior Farmers
also won this award last year. As
well Huron County Junior Farmer
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Apr. 7
were 1,710 cattle, 699 lambs and
goats. On Tuesday fed steers and
heifers sold $1 to $2 lower. Choice
steers and heifers sold $118 to $120
with sales to $122. Second cut sold
$113 to $117. Cows sold on a strong
active trade. On Thursday veal sold
on a good strong trade with holstein
veal selling steady to last week,
while beef veal sold $2 to $5 higher.
All classes of lambs sold $20 to $50
higher due to shortfall for the Easter
weekend. Sheep and goats sold
steady. On Saturday calves sold
steady and yearlings sold $2 higher.
On Monday at the vaccinated sale,
steers and heifers sold on a steady
trade.
There were 63 fed steers on offer.

steers averaging 1,474 lbs. selling

average of $115.62 with one black
heifer weighing 1,115 lbs. selling for
$122.50. Art and Geo Hinz of
Monkton, consigned six heifers
averaging 1,398 lbs. selling for an
average of $115.90 with one black
heifer weighing 1,490 lbs. selling to
Horizon Meat Packers for $121.25.
Noah Weppler of Ayton, consigned
eight heifers averaging 1,356 lbs.
selling for an average of $111.77
with one rwf heifer weighing 1,255
lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for
$119.25. Jeremy Sippel of
Milverton, consigned five heifers
averaging 1,498 lbs. selling for an
average of $113.97 with three gold
heifers averaging 1,452 lbs. selling
for $117.25.
There were 162 cows on offer.
Export types sold $68.50 to $82 with
sales to $84; beef cows, $74 to
$85.50 with sales to $97; D1 and D2,
$57 to $64; D3, $52 to $57; D4, $37

averaging 1,368 lbs. selling for an
average of $91.38 with one Belgium
blue cow weighing 1,505 lbs. selling
for $97. DJ Farms of Staffa,
consigned one blonde cow weighing

four cows averaging 1,426 lbs.
selling for an average of $81.01 with
one red cow weighing 1,435 lbs.

There were six bulls sold $83 to

There were 87 head of veal on
offer. Beef sold $140 to $170 with
sales to $179.50; good holstein, $95
to $110 with sales to $119; medium
holstein, $85 to $95; heavy holstein,
$90 to $100 with sales to $105.
