Perfection
This season Jane Zwep achieved a perfect score in a dart
game at the Cranbrook Dart Club. This was the first time in
the club’s 10-year history that had happened. The club
wrapped up its year on Wednesday with the final evening of
darts for the season. (Photo submitted)
Walton baseball diamond receives care, tile drains
The two weeks of good weather
finally got to the farmers and out on
the land they went. The second
week, many farmers were spreading
the sweet smell of spring,
cultivating, cutting and baling
cornstalks for cattle bedding,
cleaning up fence lines and at least
one fellow was planting some spring
cereal grain. The tile drainage guys
finally caught up on the 2011 work
and moved right into the 2012
without much of a break.
The Walton Ball Park received a
few much-needed tile drains to help
with the water problems in the park.Hopefully the diamond will drymuch quicker this year. Thanks toMcCallums for getting the work
done early and quickly. Scott
McDonald has been busy working it
down, levelling and getting it ready
for grass seed with help from
McGavin’s smaller equipment. The
diamond has a new layer of stone
dust and thanks to helper Kevin
Murray for helping seed. We are
hoping the park will be ready for
spring training as usual.
The snowbirds will soon be
returning from Florida. Returning
after a week’s vacation is John
Lowe. He spent a week at a resort
near Tampa and just relaxed and
soaked up the sun.
Stewart and Madeline Steiss
returned for a longer stay in Florida.
They were away about three weeks
with Bill and Donna Quipp. They
were in the St. Petersburg area and
enjoyed the great weather and going
to the ball games.
Our condolences to the Dykfamily on the passing of HerminaDyk. She will be missed by her sonJohn at home and the extended
family.
Our condolences to the Pryce
family on the passing of Harold
Pryce. He will be missed by his wife
Naomi and children Yvonne,
Murray, Brenda, Brian, Elizabeth,
Wayne, Blaine and Lorrie and their
families. Harold will be remembered
for many years as a Pioneer Seed
dealer in our area. Our sympathies to
all.
Congratulations to Elizabeth
McKercher. She has become great-
grandmother to twins, children of
Heather and Blair Rogers of
Burlington. The tiny wee ones were
born on St. Patrick’s Day. Tiny girl,
Ally and wee boy, Kiaus are the
grandchildren of Ron and Anne
(McKercher) Larson. They are doing
well but will be in hospital for a bit
to gain a little weight. Congrats to
all.
Isabel Armstrong is now residingat Braemar in Wingham. We hopeshe is doing well and will be seenaround Brussels again soon.
Our thoughts are with Maryanna
Ryan as she is in Seaforth Hospital
at this time.
The March 21 meeting of the
Cranbrook Dart Club had 19 players
and one guest, Lydia Dillman, take
to the boards. The bird girl Kathy
Workman and birthday boy, John
Gillis were seen hugging at one
point after a solid win against their
opponents. Teuni Smith took the
lead with 118 points and Ernie
Lewington beat out the rest of the
men with 140 points. Next week will
be the final wrap-up of the warmest
winter darting most of us have ever
seen.
Lydia Dillman has been here
visiting for two weeks with her
brothers John and Kevin Gillis and
families. She was also to her sister
Louise’s in Crediton before heading
home to Alberta. She wasn’t really
prepared for this hot weather, but
was pleasantly surprised and
enjoyed it. It hasn’t been too cold or
snowy at her home near Slave Lakeat Widewater, Alberta. Widewater iswhere the wild fires were last Mayand they are still in the process of
building their new home and much
of the town.

Home demolished for new house
Lorne and Bonnie Glanville have
returned from a three-week holiday
in Charlottetown, P.E.I. They were
visiting with their son Paul and
Theresa and girls Meagan and Erica.
They spent a lot of time doing things
with the grandchildren, even
attending a ringette tournament with
them. When having built-in
babysitters, it is a great time for the
parents to vacation, so Paul and
Theresa went for a week’s holiday in
Cuba. The Glanvilles returned home
on the weekend.
The Glanvilles returned in time to
prepare for the demise of their home.
The home on the North Line was
cleaned out by Lorne and Bonnie
before they went to the east coast.
Indoor fixtures, woodwork and
doors were removed while they were
away and on the weekend, the
windows and outside doors were
removed. Bright and early Monday
morning, the high hoe arrived and in
a matter of a short time, the home
was down. Many of the Glanville
family members gathered to watch
the process and Bonnie reports it
was almost like a party atmosphere.
Lorne and Bonnie moved into the
home after they were married and
lived there for over 40 years. They
will now reside in the luxurious
motorhome and shed while a new
home is built on the same site.
Three area gentlemen have
returned from a journey to
Louisville, Kentucky to attend the
truck show. Don Dalton, Gary
McNichol and Bruno Braecker
report they saw trucks and enjoyed
the warm weather of Kentucky. They
report that one the Saturday evening,
the tornado sirens went off, but they
did not see or experience the
tornado. They heard that a tornado
had touched down outside of the
city. They travelled back and stopped
to visit friends in Ohio. They had an
enjoyable trip together.
Our condolences to the McCallum
and Glanville families on the passing
of Lorna McCallum. Lorna was
the wife of Russel McCallum and
mother of Ross, Lynn, Faye and
Bev. She was the sister-in-law
of Pearl McCallum and Viola
Glanville.
Our community is saddened with
the news of the passing of Bob
Humphries of London. Bob was the
son of Mary and the late Stuart
Humphries of Walton.
Our condolences to his mother
Mary, and wife Nora and his
children Kathy, Jim and Chris and
their families. Bob was raised in
Walton, along with sisters Wenda
and Kim and had many Walton
friends. Bob and Nora lived in
London after their marriage and Bob
worked for Bell Telephone until his
retirement. Bob was included in the
Walton “Hunt” Club, and just
recently while going through old
photos, I came across a picture of a
group of them taken up north at the
old cabin. Our sympathies to the
Humphries families.
Congratulations to the Brussels
Optimist Club for another
successful evening of fundraising.
They raised over $23,000 for Make-
A-Wish Foundation and community
betterment.
Speaking of old photos, have
members of Duff’s United Church
been looking for photos about the
happenings at Duff’s over the years?
The committee is looking for photos
and memorabilia for the anniversary
happening in June. Look around,
you might be surprised what you
might find. How about pictures of
your child’s confirmation class?
Many plays were put on by the
Young People’s Group. Any
pictures? Lawn socials were held
and picnics too. Wedding pictures
must be out there.
Contact Monique Baan or Phyllis
Mitchell and tell them what you
have found.
