Racking up the points
The Brussels Curling Club held its year-end banquet in Brussels on Friday at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre. Winners of the night’s third draw and the D.A. Rann
Trophy, awarded to the overall high point winners for the season by club president Mary
Bernard, left, were, from left: Bernard, Skip Mike Alexander, Ruth Bauer, Brian Warwick and
Liz Roth. The team also received hand-carved curling coasters made by Bob Rann in memory

Alexander, Bauer, Warwick, Roth take top honoursThere were nearly 50 membersand spouses attend the year-endgathering of the Brussels CurlingClub. A social time started theevening before the bountiful array of
potluck dishes were set out.
President Mary Bernard called the
group to order for the presentations
of the prizes. Prizes were awarded
for the first draw to: first, Murray
Hoover, George Zwep, Norm
Dobson and Liz Roth, 45 points;
second, Doug Dale, Mary Ann
Thompson and Reg Vinnicombe;
third, Mike Alexander, Douwa Top,
Karen Uhler and Tracy Swart.
Second draw winners were: first,
Steve Knight, Jeff Cardiff, Karen
Uhler and Sandra Cable, 45 points;
second, Orval Bauer, Martin
Thomet, Norm Dobson and Bonnie
Hastings; third, Mervyn Bauer,
Annette Lewington, Jeff Thompson
Julie McKercher.
The overall winner of the year
with 48 points and winner of the
third draw was team Mike
Alexander, Ruth Bauer, Brian
Warwick and Liz Roth. They
received their prizes and were
presented with the D.A. RannMemorial trophy and each receiveda set of hand-carved wooden curlingrock coasters. They are providedyearly by Bob Rann in memory of
his father D.A. Rann. The second
place team was Mervyn Bauer,
Catherine Thomet, Debbie
Campbell and Ken Penfound; third,
Tom Warwick, Dianne Flood, Dona
Knight and Matthew Swart.
Congratulations to all the winners.
Following the presentations door
prizes were handed out and Steve
Knight gave the financial report on
the bonspiel. Mary Bernard thanked
everyone for curling this year, for
helping put the rocks out every week
and to anyone who helped during the
year. She introduced the new
president, Douwa Top who thanked
Mary for a job well done this past
year. He also thanked Murray
Pepper for his help this year. Douwa
thanked Jo-Ann McDonald for
organizing the help for teaching the
school children this year and a float
for the homecoming parade was
discussed. An enjoyable evening of
playing cards followed.
Young and victorious
Matthew Cottrill of Belgrave, second from right, participated
in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National
Curling Championship in Peterborough last week where his
team, the Fanshawe College Falcons, brought home the
gold medal as national champions, as did the school’s
