Auctioneer Kevin McArter had his hands full on Saturday
night as the Brussels Optimist Club held its annual spring
dinner and auction at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre. Through several different fundraising
methods, over $20,000 was raised, which will be divided
between the Make-A-Wish Foundation and community
betterment throughout Brussels. (Jim Brown photo)
Local dogs proving problematic
With the sunny days abounding
and more folks out walking, a safety
issue has come to light –
uncontrolled dogs. Strong leashes
and secure fences are needed so that
walking can be enjoyed by all. Many
people are afraid of dogs and when
one lunges or knocks a child down,
the sense of safety and security has
vanished. Please, oh
please, encourage all your
neighbours to handle their dogs
within the law.
Reading labels may seem tedious
but it can make a big difference in
your health and especially, your
intended healthy eating. Sneaking
sugars and sodium into processed
food is known, but we need to read
the labels so we know just how much
we are ingesting. Excess salt and
sugar can have damaging long-term
effects on your health. Several
different words on the label list tell
you just how many kinds of sugar
and salt have been used in the food
you are going to buy. The newest
food issue to anger me – the glossy
pictures on packages and then learn
that there is none, yes none in the
box.
Check out the blueberry pictures
in our grocery aisles and see if any at
all, hit the box. You’ll do well to find
the word blueberry on the cereal
cookies ingredient list. You will find
extra sugar and lots of food
colouring and we know not to feed
that, to the hummingbirds. So even if
you’re busy, take a moment and read the ingredients before you eatthem. Our Optimist Club held its 13thDinner and Auction on Saturday
night at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre. The ticket
price gave you a fabulous dinner,
chances on great silent auction items
and the fun of Kevin McArter
pulling money out of folks. What
more could you possibly want? Oh
yes, Make A Wish will see the
profits.
Andrea Hruska and crew of Tyme
and Again Catering offered great
food with a few nice touches to feed
the capacity crowd – very well done.
Of course the club did a terrific job
of giving fun and laughter to our
community. Where else could 40
women get a new purse in quick time
with a prize in each one as well as
the chance of a new diamond? No
fuss, no dithering, pay cash, grab
your purse of choice and on the call
see if you got the extra bonus. What
fun.
Keith Mulvey told the other side of
Make A Wish – the work with the
affected families to help make the
child’s wish come true and the
satisfaction of the completed wish.
He presented the Optimist Club with
a thank-you plaque for the financial
support and awareness of their
charity. Don Sholdice, as emcee kept
the evening moving with capable
help from the “Vanna Whites” of theBrussels Optimist Club when itemsneeded to be shown. The auctioneer got good bids be it for gravel, seed corn,
diesel fuel, baking, arts, books,
wagons or labour – well done
everyone.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
