The Blyth Brussels Bantam Reps
had a rough start in the Ontario Minor
Hockey Association (OMHA) finals
against the Ilderton Jets as they lost 4-
0 on home ice on March 18.
The team closed out their semi-
final series with the Newcastle Stars
on March 11 with a 4-2 win.
The final game of the semi-final
series was do or die for the Blyth
Brussels boys and they certainly
brought their best game.
The team set a lightning pace in
the opening minutes of the game as
the boys jumped to the early 1-0 lead
on a goal by Arden Coultes, assisted
by Josh Van Soest and Dustin
Pennington.
With two Blyth Brussels players in
the penalty box, Trent Michie from
Wyatt Ducharme gave their team an
unexpected 2-0 lead on a
shorthanded goal.
The Stars bounced back with a
deflected goal to make it 2-1 late in
the first period.
The Stars did not give up and
superb goaltender Matt McNichol
made more than one game changing
save to keep the Blyth Brussels boys
on top.
After a couple of great shots that
found the iron, Michie scored off a
pass from Ducharme, giving the
Blyth Brussels boys a 3-1 lead.
A blistering rush from Pennington
and Van Soest late in the dying
seconds of the second period had the
packed crowd crazy but didn’t result
in a goal.
The tense third period saw the
Stars come within one with 5:59
left.
Fabulous forechecking, hits and
blocked shots kept Blyth Brussels
ahead and at the 2:48 mark, a shot
from the point by Jordan Hubbard
and tipped by Pennington, fooled the
Stars goalkeeper to give the Blyth
Brussels boys a 4-2 lead.
The Blyth Brussels team showed
off their strong defensive game with
the Stars goaltender pulled, and a
Blyth Brussels player in the penalty
box to keep the game at 4-2 for the
win.
The team also took on the Jets on
March 19 in Ilderton, but a final
score was unavailable at press time.
Game three of the series with the
Jets is set for tonight in Ilderton. The
puck drops at 8:10 p.m.
PeeWee Girls take silver at YCW
The Blyth Brussels PeeWee Girls

Week Tournament earning a silver
medal finish.
The final, held on March 11
at 7 p.m., was the second
game of the day for the
Blyth Brussels girls who had
bested the BCH Ice Dogs 1-0 at 9
a.m.
Previously the team also took on
Grey Highlands and earned a 7-1
win, the BCH Ice Dogs again and
lost 2-1 and the Seaforth Stars
whom they bested 3-1.
Lightning edge out Sarnia Sting
The number one seed Saugeen
Maitland Midget AA Lightning
edged the second seed Sarnia Sting
by a score of 2-1 in their opening
game of the west division
championship series in Lower
Lakes League play on
Sunday.
The Lightning held a 2-0 lead late
in the game until the Sting broke
Stephanie Sluys’ shutout with a
couple minutes to play. Sarnia
pulled their goalie but
Saugeen’s defence held the Sting at
bay.
Scoring for the Lightning were
Kelly Gribbons and Hannah
Davidson.
Bantams top Lucknow tourney
The Bantam Local League team
played in the Elaine Irwin Memorial
Tournament in Lucknow earlier this
month and won the ‘A’ side.
The team faced off against the
home team for the final match and
came away with a 4-3 win.
Previously they had taken on
Seaforth in the semi-finals earning a
3-1 win and Tiverton who they beat
5-4 after scoring with less than a
minute left on the clock.
The most valuable player of the
final game for Blyth Brussels went
to Patrick Franken.
In tough
The Blyth Brussels Bantam Rep team is in tough against
Ilderton this week after losing their first game at home on
Sunday by a score of 4-0 in the second round of the OMHA
playoffs. The boys travelled to Ilderton on Monday night and
then again on Thursday to continue the series, hopefully
winning a few games to force the series back to the area.

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club’s members enjoyed the best of
both worlds on the weekend and had
their choice to golf or curl. With the
beautiful weather this past week I
am not sure as to whether I should
be doing my golf write-up or my
curling write-up.
We opened the course up Friday,
March 16 and some of our diehard
golfers took full advantage of it.
On Saturday the club hosted the
third annual Funspiel. Many of this
group were first time curlers and
they did their part to live up to the
name and the purpose of the event.
Scott and Joan Bridge again did a
fantastic job of getting this group of
friends and basically good people
together and have turned this day
into one of the best fundraisers of
the year for the curling club. Great
work Joan and Scott.
On Monday, March 21 the
daytime curlers skips picking up
wins were Clayt Ruppel, Bob
Johnston, Bill Tolton, Norm Fairles,
Bruce Robertson and Stewart
Leedham. The Monday night men
had Leedham and Johnston pick up
their second win of the day along
with Barry Simpson. Tuesday ladies
winners were Kelsie Eadie and
Emily and Leanne Elston.
The Tuesday competitive skips
curling their teams to wins were Earl
Fitch and Niel Edgar. Wayne
Horton, Scott Bridge and Robert
Grein led their teams to victory on
Wednesday night.
The Thursday daytime league saw
Glenn McMichael, Bob Johnston,
Bill Tolton, Hugh Clugston, Norm
Fairles and Stewart Leedham teams
take home victories. The Thursday
night Belgrave winners were Niel
Edgar, John Nixon and Larry
Johnston. Friday Bill McDonald,
Barry Simpson and Wayne Waechter
wrapped up the week on top. This
Saturday, March 24 the club will be
hosting the Masonic Lodge
Bonspiel.

Skips and Stones

Fun bonspiel ends club’s year
The members of the Brussels
Curling Club enjoyed a fun night for
the final night of curling for
2011/2012 season. The teams were
chosen via a draw of numbers and
they played on that ice. The games
started with a player familiar with
skipping starting and then each team
player moved up and played a
different position and then skipped.
Everyone had fun, but those
unfamiliar with skipping soon found
out it is not as easy as it might look.
Remembering how much the ice
curls in different areas of the house,
to tell the player how hard to throw
the rock and when to sweep or not to
sweep. So many things to remember.
Everyone had fun and after six
ends of play, we called the season
complete.
A social time followed with
discussion about the weekend
bonspiel.
The annual potluck and
presentation of awards and prizes
will be held on March 23. Social
hour starts at 6:30 p.m. with the
meal to follow and awards next. The
evening will continue with card
games and social.
The Brussels Curling Club’s final
bonspiel of the year was held on
Saturday, March 17 at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community
Centre. There were 20 teams hoping
to have the “Luck of the Irish” and
be the winners of their respective
draws. There was plenty of green to
be seen as many of the
teams dressed in their finest “Irish”
attire.
The first 10 teams played at 9 a.m.
and the second draw started at 10:30
a.m. Two ladies of the club, Jean
Bewley and Dona Knight provided
the muffins and coffee for the
arriving curlers. Added interest for
the day was anyone “hogging” a
rock, was able to wear beautiful
Another great season
The Brussels Curling Club wrapped up its 2011-2012
season with the St. Patrick’s Day Bonspiel last weekend. It
would be the last time the group would gather at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre to curl this
season. The group will hold its annual end-of-year banquet
on Friday night at the community centre. (Vicky Bremner photo)Continued on page 18
