Come out and support a great cause
Yes, that really was a rooster you
heard crowing. The folks on Sports
Drive have been charitable to an
escapee known to have blown off a
truck, possibly from the sales barn
two weeks ago. As a survivor, he
escaped serious injury from his fall
from the truck and was seen picking
about the Library. At present he has
set up housekeeping with Harvey
and Todd and we’re assuming very
soon they’ll be trying their luck in
the poultry industry. So listen
carefully in the morning and you
may just like the sound.
Campfires are always fun,
especially when children and
marshmallows are involved. To have
one on a Tuesday in March is
noteworthy. We were invited to
Cranbrook last week to enjoy the
open fire, complete with wieners
and s’mores. To make it even better
for the Workman grandkids, Duncan
and Everett from London and ours
from Listowel, Frank hooked up the
wagon and tractor and gave the kids
the complete tour of Cranbrook,
including the party place. The
stories of this tour were a riot and all
the funnier through the eyes of
urban children.
Birthdays are always fun and we
all celebrate to suit ourselves. For
some food is the important thing, for
others a trip or night out is the
celebration, for others music and
friends are the key to the event. To
celebrate 60 birthdays Jim Lee
opened the Upper Deck to Shrimp
Daddy and the Sharpe Shooters as
well as many friends from now and
from years ago. Music appreciation
was all that was needed to celebrate
the evening. Friends from Owen
Sound and area came to enjoy the
great music and remind Jim of
school day antics. Brussels and area
friends came to thank Jim for being
part of our community. Hope 60 is a
very good year Jim.
Speaking of Jim – the Armstrong
Aerodome was a busy spot on the
weekend with the excellent weather.
It seems the first landing occurred
on Sunday before the air traffic
controller was out of bed, or at least
in the tower. Hmmmmm. It was nice
to hear the planes overhead.
As our community changes and
adjusts to new realities, churches
too need to do the same. The
ministers of the United Churches in
the north part of Huron did an
exchange on Sunday that had Gary
Clark in Brussels and Sandra Cable
in Fordwich and Peter Kugba-
Nyande in Blyth. The hope of the
exchange was to see how we are the
same yet different. It’s time to see
that we need to stretch our ideas of
church and how that fits into today’s
community. This was the beginning
of sharing ideas, talents, and
resources in a changing world.
Enjoy the sun, but watch for the
snow.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
The Irish fry
Lisa Glanville was busy Friday night at the Brussels Legion frying up chicken wings for the
eager diners waiting downstairs. The Legion held its wing night and meat draw to celebrate
the Irish holiday of St. Patrick’s Day, which technically fell on the next day. (Vicky Bremner photo)
At the Branch
St. Patricks event held at Legion
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It has been a mix of slow days and
busy days at the Brussels Legion
Branch. The first of the week had
the Cadet Corp on holidays for
March Break. Keep collecting pop
cans and returnable bottles for Cadet
fundraising and drop them off at the
Branch on Tuesday for pickup. A
reminder that they are having a
Mom-to-Mom sale at the Branch on
the weekend.
The Accessibility Committee met
on Tuesday evening to discuss new
options for the Branch. The
committee had very productive
discussions and will hopefully be
moving to the next step with plans.
The Thursday night darts had 14
darters taking aim at the boards.
Winners were: first, John
Stadelmann and Sandra Josling;
second, Roger McHardy and Deb
Caan; high man, John Stroop, 67;
high lady, Kae Smith, 79. There are
only three weeks until the end of the
dart season. Come out and enjoy.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by nearly 40
diners. Thanks to our volunteer
bartender for the night, Nanci
Ducharme. This week will be
Salisbury Steak.
We have said goodbye to part-
time bartender Tracy Manley. Tracy
and her family are moving east and
we wish them the best in their new
surroundings.
On the Friday night St. Patrick’s
Day wings, fries and meat draws
were held following dinner. There
were a few folks around early and
then some of the players and parents
of the PeeWee Rep hockey team
arrived to enjoy some food and fun.
The team appreciates the support of
the Legion in helping to sponsor the
team in tournaments. The Legion
appreciates the support of the team
members and their parents by
attending the wing nights. Coach
Gary Pipe reports that the team
participated in the Young Canada
Tournament in Goderich this week.
They played five games from
Wednesday until their final game on
Friday. The Brussels PeeWee Rep
team defeated South Huron 3-1 in
their final game to become the
consolation champions.
Congratulations to the PeeWee team
and its coaches.
The other PeeWee teams,
including the local team, had a good
week at the tournament. The
PeeWee Girls team lost in the “A”
final in double overtime. A heart-
breaking loss.
The PeeWee AE team also
participated in the tournament in
Goderich. They played in the
consolation final and lost 2-1 in
double overtime. It sounds like a
great week of hockey for all the
Brussels teams. Congratulations to
all the teams.
The Branch had a pair of
gentlemen participating in
provincial double darts on Saturday
in Etobicoke Branch 46. Comrades
Eric Ross and Andy Adams enjoyed
a good day, but will not advance to
dominion play.
Volunteer bartending duties at the
Branch on Saturday had Deb Ross
looking after things.
The Huron County dart challenge
was held at the Branch on Sunday
afternoon. There were 20 darters
hoping to be the best in Huron. They
had a good day.
The general meeting will be next
Tuesday evening, March 27.
