The Grade 1/2 class is learning about report writing. As an introduction, they have explored a number of texts to determine the features of non-fiction materials and compared them to fiction resources. Using a variety of non- fiction media, they are researching the grizzly or brown bears. Do you know why these bears are called grizzly bears? They learned that the reason is because their fur has a grizzled look because the tips of their hair are grey and grey means grizzled. The students have enjoyed a number of learning opportunities to develop research skills. One of the favourite activities was eating bear foods. They graphed data about their favourite bear food and found in the Grade 1/2 class, tuna was the most popular, honey ranked second and the least popular was a tie with berries and salmon. Fortunately, they did not indulge in some of the other delicacies like grass mice, squirrels, bugs and worms. They did learn that bears are omnivores because they eat plants and meat. As they research, they are learning how to think about facts and sort them according to the science classifications of appearance, behaviour, food and other important information. Using this information, they have created awesome cut and paste habitats for the brown bears. After finishing their investigations of the brown bear, students will have the opportunity to research an animal of their own choosing by applying the skills and knowledge they have already learned. Basketball was on Tuesday, March 6. The girls won the championship, but the boys came second. Both teams played hard. By Courtney Bachert All students are very excited for the week to come: March break! Students were looking ahead to having an entire week off from school to do what they want all day. Mrs. Decker’s class finished their bridge making and started on the bridge breaking. All of the students were in groups that they named and built bridges out of toothpicks and glue. Out of all of the groups, RichBridge won, their bridge holding 5,500 grams of weight. All of the groups had a lot of fun creating their bridges and destroying them. Some students in the class, including Ben and Connor, are going to spend their amazing week off of school visiting friends and going to Florida. Connor is especially excited because he is going to see Legoland and the Harry Potter exhibit during his trip to Florida. The class also enjoyed doing the activity, Novel In An Hour. This is where Mrs. Decker reads part of a novel, and gets the students into groups to read a certain amount of chapters together then act them out. By the groups acting out the chapters, the class then sees the story in a different perspective and enjoys the story all the more. In math the class is working on angles and how to measure them. The Grade 4/5 students also enjoyed themselves on their first class trip skiing with the rest of the older grades.
